--- Only You in Every Lifetime Aiden Hale did not lose. But he had been outmaneuvered. The footage looped again. Aria’s hand resting lightly on Dominic Vale’s arm. Not intimate. Not careless. Strategic. Aiden leaned forward, elbows on his knees, the city sprawled beneath him like a kingdom he owned but did not trust. “Zoom,” he said. The image sharpened. Vale’s expression didn’t change, but his thumb tapped once against Aria’s wrist. A signal. Aiden’s jaw hardened. Three months ago, Vale had tried to acquire Hale Industries through shell companies routed through Singapore. Aiden had blocked him before the paperwork hit public record. Vale didn’t like being denied. Neither did Aiden. His phone vibrated against the glass table. Unknown Number. He stared at it. Then answered. Silence. Soft breathing. “Aiden,” Aria’s voice said finally, smooth as poured silk. His pulse didn’t change. He made sure of it. “You enjoy theatrics now?” he asked. A quiet laugh. “You’re the one replaying footage at four in the morning.” He didn’t ask how she knew. Aria Laurent knew everything that mattered. “Is Vale your new investor,” he asked, “or your new weapon?” “Careful,” she murmured. “Jealousy doesn’t suit you.” “I don’t get jealous.” “No,” she agreed. “You get even.” A pause. Then her tone shifted — subtle, deliberate. “He’s hosting a private summit tonight. Off-record. Energy sector. International players.” Aiden’s eyes flicked back to the skyline. To the refinery lights blinking red in the distance. “The Price of Fire,” he said quietly. She didn’t respond. Which meant yes. Vale was making a move. Energy contracts meant control. Control meant leverage. And leverage meant power over governments. Power over Hale Industries. “You’re warning me,” Aiden said. “Consider it…” she hesitated, just slightly, “…balance.” He stood, straightening his cufflinks. “Why?” Another pause. And for the first time since he’d known her— Aria Laurent sounded human. “Because if Dominic Vale wins,” she said softly, “no one else gets to.” The line went dead. Aiden stared at the blank screen. Outside, the first light of morning finally broke across the glass towers of the city. War, then. Not corporate. Not subtle. Personal. He pressed a button on his desk. “Get me everything on Vale’s summit,” he ordered. “Guest list. Security. Venue. I want it before noon.” “Yes, sir.” He hesitated. “And find out why Aria Laurent is playing both sides.” A pause on the other end. “That may be difficult.” Aiden’s reflection stared back at him in the glass — calm. Controlled. Dangerous. “I don’t care if it’s difficult,” he said. “I care if it’s impossible.” And nothing was impossible. Not for him. Not yet. --- If you’d like, I can: Increase the romantic tension between Aiden and Aria Add a dramatic confrontation at the summit Shift perspective to Aria in Episode Four Or deepen the business/political intrigue angle What direction do you want next?
