Chapter One

Kat was getting really sick of interviews, this must have been her tenth one in the past two weeks. She could have easily scored a high position within her Coven, and perhaps she would when she was a little older. For now, however, she wanted to explore. Most Covens stayed within their own boundaries with only a few outliers. That’s not to say they didn’t interact with the outside world, as a matter of fact, it was quite necessary in order to survive. Humans were one thing, but nowadays even other beings require money and legal documents to survive. It was a nuisance in all honesty. “Katherine McArthy,” Kat looked up and stood at her name being called. A mousey-looking brunette in heels she could barely stand in smiled at her from the door, she motioned through the door, “Just through here dear. Sit at the table, can I get you some coffee?” “No, thank you.” Kat gave her a smile before sitting at the table as directed. The room was well lit in natural sunlight that poured through floor to ceiling windows down one wall. A small sigh of relief fought to escape her. Most Supernaturals felt vaguely uncomfortable in large cities, it went against their instincts. It made sense for the Nymphs, Shifters or Werewolves, beings that spend a great deal of their time in nature, so people often forget that it makes others uncomfortable too. Witches, too, were creatures of nature. That’s where their magic was based, with the wind and rain, in fire, flora and fauna. It was because of this that the built-up cities of stone and concrete made Kat feel stifled, like she didn’t have a solid connection with the world around her. A fish out of water, some would say. There was something else about this room, however, something that tickled at the back of her neck and made her feel warm in many ways. This particular interview was for a company called Lawson Biotech, a company that specialises in Medicinal Biotechnology, and Kat had spent the past few years of her life studying Biomedical Sciences. “You’re here for the Secretarial role, Miss McArthy?” A man in a dark suit and silver glasses spoke from the other end of the table. Something about him made Kat’s hair sit on edge. She took a moment to thank the Moon Goddess she’d taken a moment to write some concealment runes under her clothes. Not the normal concealment runes that allow Witches to fade into the shadows, but rather a much weaker form that simply hid her aura, her scent, whatever other Supernaturals used to figure out her own status. “That is correct Sir, I believe you’ll find my resume sufficient. I have a degree in Biomedical Sciences, as well as previous experience in Admin work and Secretarial work.” “And references?” “From my three previous employers.” A few of the men behind the table nodded and murmurs of approval sounded. The questions lasted no more than fifteen minutes. Kat’s skin itched with the energy of the runes and the aura’s coming from the table of Directors. Most, if not all, were not Human. It’s not something she wasn’t used to, per say, but it would take some adjustment. It had been a while since she had been in such a... Wolf dominated environment. Perhaps she’d bring some treats and toys in if she got the job. She fought the urge to smile as she stood and thanked them. --- “Grandma? I picked up the rosemary from Aunt Mary on the way here.” Katherine hung her blazer by the door as she entered the house. It was an older house made of red stone bricks, white window frames and, in Kat’s opinion, a gorgeous green front door. It had a large garden that was kept just on the wilder side of organised. Plants sprawled out from their designated areas, but never entangled or damaged others. It always brought a smile to her face. Katherine shuddered a little and let her magic eat away the runes off her body. It felt like cool water washing over her skin, and felt just as relaxing as settling into a soft bed after a long day. It was the sensation of her magic reaching out its tendrils after being trapped all day. “Oh Katherine, do stop that and just bathe like a normal person, I can feel you stretching from here. Now bring me that rosemary. There’s a man in the next town over who is having problems with his memory.” Katherine’s grandmother was a Coven Elder, and had been for over thirty years. Elder Cindy McArthy, one of the three most powerful Witches in the Coven of the Eternal Garden. The silver-haired witch stood over a mortar and pestle, one hand impatiently outstretched for the rosemary which Kat obediently handed over. “Are you making him a memory tonic?” “No, I’m making him a fertility tonic for Goddess’s sake you stupid girl, of course it’s a memory tonic,” Cindy tutted impatiently, “How was your interview?” Katherine picked up a muffin from the windowsill and took a bite before answering. “I think it went well. Impressing a bunch of wolves is child's play. I think it will be easy enough to hide my presence there. Must I use those runes though? You must have some tonic that can help-” Her words were cut short as the muffin was whisked out of her hand. “And what if you’re in danger, hm? A tonic takes at least a day to get out of your system. Those runes, as you’ve just displayed, can be burned off immediately. Go do something useful, like shower. You smell like dog and… and-” Cindy stopped to look at her for a moment, “Concrete.” Katherine hummed in agreement and made her way upstairs to the bathroom. Soaking in a bath was her favourite way to unwind after days like these. The white tub was soon filled with steaming water and flower heads, and the scent of jasmine and moringa filled the air. Just as she climbed in, her phone lit up with an email. Kat wiped her hands off on the towel and reached over to get it. A grin lit up her face. ‘Dear Katherine, We are pleased to inform you that you have been offered the role of Secretary.’ There will be wine tonight.
