Helin was seething with rage. She barged into the expansive lobby of the office banging the door behind her and heading for another door when the bodyguard and secretary ran after her blocking her on both sides.
“Get your hands off me," Helin yelled at the bodyguard who held her arm, “leave my face or I go through you," she screamed at the secretary who stood before her.
Helin was at the verge of losing her 19 year old relationship with Cartar, an heir to a flourishing company owned by a close associate of her father.
They had known each other since they were four and went to school together. Both families were well aware of their relationship and seemingly gave their consent.
Lately, her half sister, Zara started looking for ways to get between the both of them but that would happen only if Cartar gave her the chance.
“I want to see your boss,” she requested.
“He's not here, ma’am,” the secretary who stood in front of her lied.
“Who isn't here? The same person who left the house this morning for the office or someone else? This better be some sort of joke,” she wished.
She tried once more to forcefully gain entrance, but failed again as the two men she contended with were physically stronger than her.
She dipped her hand into her purse and brought out her phone which she used in tracking his location. Fortunately, Google location indicated he was in his office.
“See, see,” she said to the bodyguard, pushing the phone close to his face, as though he was blind.
The bodyguard avoided the phone without looking at it but continued staring at her face.
She turned the phone to the direction of the secretary to show her as well but she gave it no attention.
“He must have kept his phone or iPad to go see someone at The lounge bar. If you give him some time, he will return,” the guard lied.
“Your boss did not tell you how to lie properly. Don't bother, I'm here to unmask every lie you tell me. He doesn't leave his phone at a place and stay somewhere else simply because phones are not heavy. Now, let me in,” she commanded, pushing the secretary off the way.
As all this was going on, the secretary's telephone rang.
“Now you'd have to choose between picking the phone or leaving my way. I know you will choose one and it would definitely not be standing in front of me, so I will wait for you to move.” she scowled.
As soon as she tried to leave, the guard tightened the grip he had on her.
She answered the phone. “Let her in,” came a voice which happened to be her boss who was alerted by the scuffle.
But before she could drop the phone and alert the guard to let her be, Helin had already kicked him on the leg and stormed into Carter's office.
He was at the table responding to some query from his father, requesting an explanation for his absence at a very important business engagement.
He came from a very reputable family which took the best or nothing but never mediocrity.
“Shame,” Helin screamed, slapping some pictures on his office table.
These were pictures of Carter and Zara as they appeared on the internet. They made headlines and caused tongues to wag everywhere in the private business sector.
“What is this? I asked you who you attended the birthday celebration with and you lied.”
“How can a beautiful and smart lady like you be so bedeviled by this cheap, mundane publication?”
“Are the publications false, then? The publications are true, so why shouldn't I be disturbed. Anyway, I understand it now. You never cared enough.”
“We were just having a random business chat. It's nothing serious. Forget the silly girl, she really can't keep her hands to herself. All this means nothing,” he explained, gradually moving close to her enough to touch her cheek, but the more he came close to her, the farther away she moved.
“Tell me how many business conversations take place in this position. How many times have we had conversations posing this way? When you want to lie, I suggest you do it intelligently. You're too big for this.”
“It's not a lie, it was nothing serious,” he moved closer to the drawer of his table to single out a stick of cigarette from the park. Then he edged towards his shelf, reached for a lighter and lit up the cigarette.
“You often said keeping some distance from each other helps fight the addiction. I don't see it working.”
“Your attempt at changing the topic will not work today.”
“I told you we are just having a random business conversation. Moreover, I didn't know who she was until yesterday,” he asserted.
“Good. I believe you about this one being a random business conversation.” She made a quote mark in the air using her fingers. What about these?” She dipped her hand into her purse once more and brought out a picture where they were in a very compromising position.
Carter had carried Zara up and placed on a bathroom sink, making her circle her legs around his waist while they kissed passionately.
Carter didn't say a word at the picture but rather stared out of his office window into space.
“No words now, huh?” she queried.
“I'm so sorry. I didn't mean for all of that to go this way.”
“You didn't care. If you cared, you would have respected me and not done this. I'm just here to show how deliberate this was. You informed me you wouldn't be showing up early or that you wouldn't come at all but you were there from the beginning of the party.”
“You don't understand I had some things to finish up at home. I didn't quite plan to attend," he explained.
“Enough of all this shenanigans. It's safe to say that this is the end of the road for us, right? Just one hell of bad news for me this new year.”
Helin’s anger by now was beyond measure and yet she didn't think of anything else to do. She managed to steady herself so as not to do anything irrational.
Swiftly, she zoomed out of his office banging the door afterwards.
“Don't wake the dead yet, " he teased. Throwing guffaws and laughing mockingly at her.
