CHAPTER 8: NEW BEGINNINGS

937 Words
Three months later. Life had changed completely for both of them, yet in many ways, it was exactly as it was meant to be. Gabriel Sterling was now Captain Sterling, head of the Major Crimes Unit. He had been given full authority to restructure the department, root out any remaining corruption, and build a police force that truly served and protected the people. He was respected, trusted, and loved by his team. He had turned his dedication to justice into a legacy. But despite his high rank and heavy responsibilities, Gabriel’s favorite place to be was not his office. It was Hale Corporation. Vivienne had taken her place as the CEO and sole owner of her father’s empire. She had rebuilt the company from the ground up, cleaning it of all illegal ties, restructuring it into a powerful, ethical, and philanthropic organization. Under her leadership, Hale Corp became the biggest contributor to city development, education, and social welfare projects. She was brilliant at it. She worked harder than anyone, thought faster than her competitors, and led with a mix of sharp intelligence and fierce compassion that made her employees adore her and her rivals fear her. She was the definition of a Powerful Female Lead — wealthy, influential, capable, and unstoppable. And yet, every afternoon, without fail, Gabriel would show up at her office, usually unannounced, usually looking incredibly handsome in his uniform or sharp suit, and completely distracting her from her work. "You have a meeting with the board in ten minutes," Vivienne said without looking up from her tablet, though a small smile played on her lips as she felt his presence behind her chair. Gabriel leaned down, wrapping his arms around her shoulders and pressing a kiss to her neck, right below her ear. "They can wait. I am the Captain, remember? I outrank everyone." Vivienne laughed, setting her device aside and turning in her chair to look up at him. "Not in my building, you don't. Here, I am the boss." Gabriel’s eyes darkened with that familiar heated look. He loved it when she was like this — commanding, confident, and undeniably in charge. It turned him on more than anything else. "I know," he murmured, sliding his hands down to rest on her waist, pulling her up and onto his lap despite her squeak of protest. "I love it when you are the boss. I love knowing that the most powerful woman in the entire city... belongs entirely to me." Vivienne looped her arms around his neck, looking at him with love and amusement. "I belong to you? Or do you belong to me, Detective? Because from what I remember... you were the one who knelt, begged, and risked everything just to be near the 'criminal' you were hunting." Gabriel groaned playfully, burying his face in the crook of her neck. "Are you ever going to let me forget that?" "Never," Vivienne replied happily, running her fingers through his dark hair. "It’s my favorite story. The great Detective Sterling, hunter of evil, falls hopelessly in love with the woman he is supposed to lock up." She kissed his forehead, his eyes, his nose, finally landing on his lips. "It’s the best story ever written." Their relationship was a perfect balance of equals. They were both powerful, both intelligent, both capable of handling danger and leadership. But when they were together, titles and ranks didn't matter. She was his woman. He was her man. They still had plenty of action and excitement in their lives. Old enemies of the syndicate occasionally tried to surface. New threats emerged. And Vivienne, being the target she was, still needed protection. But she didn't just rely on Gabriel’s protection; she could still handle herself perfectly. There were times when they found themselves back-to-back in dangerous situations, guns drawn, moving in perfect sync, fighting side-by-side just like they did on that first terrible night. She was fast, lethal, and strategic. He was strong, precise, and protective. They were a team — the best team the city had ever seen. One evening, after successfully stopping a group of remaining arms dealers and walking away from a dangerous firefight unscathed, they stood catching their breath behind their car. Vivienne had taken down two men twice her size with nothing but her skill and a tactical baton. She was breathing hard, her hair messy, her eyes blazing with adrenaline. Gabriel looked at her, completely mesmerized. He walked over, wiping a smudge of dirt from her cheek, his expression a mix of awe and desire. "You know," Gabriel said breathlessly. "Most men want a wife who is soft, gentle, and stays out of trouble. Someone they have to protect." Vivienne smirked, wiping sweat from her forehead, her stance still ready for action. "And you don't?" Gabriel pulled her close, pressing her against the car door, trapping her between his arms. He looked deep into her eyes, his voice low and rough. "I got something better. I got a woman who fights wars with me. Who saves me just as much as I save her. Who is smarter than everyone in the room, including me. Who is fierce enough to survive hell and kind enough to still love me." He leaned down, his lips brushing against hers. "I got a Queen. And I am the luckiest man alive." Vivienne melted against him, her fierce warrior facade softening instantly for him alone. She kissed him deeply, wrapping her arms around his neck, ignoring the sirens approaching in the distance. "And I got my hero," she whispered. "My hunter turned lover. My justice turned love."
