Chapter 7At the Monday night ball in the Upper Rooms, Jacob was stationed at his usual position near the refreshment table to keep an eye on Letty as she danced. The revellers were a little thin on the ground this evening and even the popular card room was half-empty. Aunt Harriette had informed them, with a touch of ill-humour, that there were at least two private parties being held elsewhere. Although Jacob had made consolatory noises in response to his aunt’s complaint, to his mind, fewer people made for a less crowded and stifling room, which could only be a good thing. He also noticed that with reduced numbers in the ballroom, there was a pleasing note of informality about tonight’s proceedings.
