CHAPTER 4
PROTECTING SONIA
“Is that all you want, Dad?” Sonia asked, raising a brow, and immediately, she placed a call across to Alex.
The chill from the air conditioner makes the atmosphere of the office a perfect place.
Alex, dressed in a roadside engineer outfit, sat on the four-wheeled chair and stared incredulously at the marriage certificate in his hands.
“Sir, you look different today,” his assistant, who just walked in, commented as he saw him in the unusual outfit.
Alex smiled. “Yeah, that's because everything is different now. I feel entirely different,” he admitted.
Still conversing, Alex's phone rang.“Give me a second,” he said with a raised brow and picked up the call immediately, seeing that it was Sonia.
“Hi, Alex. Are you busy now? My dad wants to meet you.”
“Uhmm, not really. Nothing is more important than you. But I'll just need to change my outfit,” Alex responded swiftly.
“No need for that. I'll text you the address immediately,” Sonia suggested.
“That's alright. I'll be right there.”
“Frank. Cancel all my meetings for this afternoon. I need to go somewhere very important,” Alex instructed his assistant and left immediately.Impatiently waiting at the Sinclair's mansion, Sonia sighted Alex walking in through the door.
Without hesitation, she ran to welcome him with a hug.
“Good afternoon, everyone. I'm Alex Garret, Sonia's husband,” Alex introduced himself as soon as he stood before the Sinclair family.
Mr. Sinclair's brows furrowed.
“Garrett? As in, the Garret’s corporation?” he asked.
Alex said nothing but only smiled and watched his wife obliquely.
“Come on, Dad, does he look like he's from the wealthiest family in the country?” Clara cut in before she redirected her gaze at Sonia.
“Gosh! I can't believe that you married a road mender like this, Sonia. But, I guess that's just to show how desperate you are,” she added.
“Well, at least she's not with some jerk who left his fiancée to drown on their engagement. So if he could do that to Sonia, what more do you think he could do to you?” Alex mentioned it, provoking the anger in Mr. Sinclair.
“How dare you speak to my daughter like that in my house?” Mr. Sinclair yelled.
“I don't care who you are. But bully my wife again, and I'll come for you. Consider that a warning,” Alex said firmly.
“Are you hurt, baby?” He asked, after redirecting his gaze to Sonia, snuggling her into his arms.
“Who do you think you are? You bottom feeder!” Lena said hoarsely.
“Come on, babe, let's go,” Alex mentioned, and wrapped his hands behind her back as they walked out to their car.
Sonia blushed. The feeling of her family's piercing eyes boring into her back gave her more satisfaction.
“What! I never imagined this could ever happen!” Mr. Sinclair exclaimed, looking worried rather than excited.
“Don't worry, Dad, I'll marry Beldon in Sonia's place,” Clara suggested as she sat next to her father.
“Never!” He declared and glared at her with disapproval. “Come on, sweetheart, you can do better than Beldon Hart,” he opined.“
Just take a look at this,” he said as he took out a card from his pocket and handed it over to Clara.
“The Garret's corporation banquet on Sunday?” Clara read it aloud, her tone laced with surprise.
“Yes. Their only heir, Alvin Garret, is officially taking over. He's kept his identity a secret. But he is the youngest billionaire CEO in the country. So, if you become the next Mrs. Garret in the world, imagine all the wealth and fame,” her father explained.
“Yes, Dad. I'll never disappoint you, I promise. I'll get into the Garret family, and then I'll take everything from Sonia,” Clara said with an assuring smile.
“Now, that's my girl,” her father said and gave her a thumbs up.Walking towards the mansion, Sonia felt a sense of gratitude wash over her when she remembered the whole scenario at her father's mansion.
“I'm sorry for what happened, Alex. I never knew they'd insult you like that. This is the first time someone stood up for me,” Sonia admitted, tears of joy clinging to her lashes as she stared at him.
“Hey, don't worry about that. I'm your husband now. And it is my duty to take some bullets for you,” Alex mentioned casually, trailing her eyelids with his thumb, until they got startled by a husky, familiar voice from behind.
“Hey, take your filthy hands off my girlfriend!” Beldon warned.
“I broke up with you, Beldon. Why don't you go find your mistress and leave me alone?” Sonia yelled.
Beldon's expression remained indifferent. His lips curled up in a bitter laugh. “I didn't agree to breaking off our engagement, Sonia. You're coming home with me,” he roared and moved closer to drag her with him.
“What do you think you want to do?” Alex barked, hitting Beldon on the chest.
“Lay your f*****g hands on my wife, and I'll smash your face. Now get out!” he warned.
“Come on, darling. Let's go home,” Alex added as he wrapped his hands around her waist.
“Fine, Sonia. You're breaking off the engagement, right? I'll make sure to destroy your life and that of your f*****g husband too!” Beldon assured with a bitter tone.
Back at the mansion, Sonia took out one of the boxes in the master bedroom wardrobe.
She sobbed silently as she began to fold the clothes. She couldn't help but think about her past.
“I'm sorry, I couldn't find a bathrobe in my size,” Alex, who just returned from the shower, said as he stood behind her. His wet hands and the refreshing smell of soap still lingered around his body.
Sonia felt a sense of attraction waving over her. But the image that kept flashing in her eyes was that of Beldon.
“Alright, I'll order you one by tomorrow,” she answered absentmindedly.
“Hey, are you okay? Besides, why did you...?” Alex was still talking when she cut him short.
“Never mind. I'm just throwing out Beldon's stuff. Five years of supporting a guy through college and this is what I'm left with,” she said, her voice shaking and eyes almost tearing up.
“Sorry for that. But you know there's always one guy who would never treat you that way, and that's me,” Alex teased.
The waves of love emanating from him were something she couldn't resist.
Gradually, she found her eyes locked in his, and the crashing of their lips didn't delay them rolling on the bed for the first time as a couple.
Sonia woke up to the sound of the music and the warm memories of her husband's gentle touch.
Stunned at why Alex was nowhere to be found in the room at such early hours, she sighted a written note alongside a tray of coffee on the bedside table.
“I'm off to work. But here's a little breakfast in bed for my baby.” Her face blushed as she read.
“It must be tiring working at the construction company all day. I have to get my company back so that I can take care of Alex,” she muttered to herself.
Going through the files sent in by his assistant yesterday, he heard a knock on his door.
“Boss, here are the latest designs sent in by the Hart Corporation,” his assistant reported and handed over the file to him.
“Wait, is that the same as Beldon Hart’s company?” Alex asked, his brows furrowing as he stared at the content of the file.
“Yes, sir. We have fifteen projects starting with them next month,” the assistant answered.
“Not anymore!” Alex declared and threw the file into the trash bin by his side.
“I need you to pass this down to all departments, effective immediately. We're pulling out from all projects involving the Hart's Corporation.” He added plainly.
