A couple of weeks go by and nothing eventful happens. Jason hasn't talked to me since, but I do catch him winking at me sometimes. To be honest, I don't know how to feel when he does that, and I'm not even sure if I like him THAT much, I just feel very nervous when he does glance at me and wink at me. But I'm not sure how I feel about everything, so I haven't decided on how I feel about Jason.
As I'm lost in thought about what I may be feeling about Jason, Stella taps on my shoulder and pulls me out of my thoughts. I turn my head towards her to see what she wants.
"Hey, are you excited about Jason's party tonight?" Stella asked me with eager curiosity in her tone.
"I'm so nervous!! I can't feel anything else besides nervousness. I don't even know if he will even talk to me tonight! I would feel relieved if he didn't. Less pressure on my part."
"Oh come on!! Don't be so nervous! You won't be able to have any fun if you're so nervous! So just take a deep breath... and relax a bit. Okay?"
I take a deep breath in and try to relax, "You're right Stella, I'm just not going to think about it, the more I think about it, the more stressed I get."
"That's my girl! We are going to have so much fun tonight!! Just think of tonight as a girls' night out... but at Jason's party." Stella said trying to keep my mind off of Jason.
I can't help but chuckle a bit when she added the part about Jason's party, "Sure, girls' night out it is!" Stella jumped up in excitedly, and the teacher suddenly looked at us with a warning making us both stop talking and pay full attention to the lesson.
I hear Stella whisper behind me, "Let's just go over to my house and get ready, no detours after school this time, okay?"
I whisper back, "I have to go check something at my stepdad's house, okay? Then I will be right on over"
Stella's voice becomes a louder whisper, "What?!? You can't go over there! What if he hurts you again!?"
"Don't worry Stella, I just have to check the mailbox for something. I won't even see him." I say calmly trying to reassure her that I will be alright.
Her whisper becomes quiet again but a bit hesitant this time, "Do...do y-you... um... want me to come with?"
I shrug, "You can if you want, I am just checking to see if I received any mail regarding my college applications."
Even though she was behind me, and I couldn't see her, I somehow felt her smile behind me, "Okay, I'll come with you!!"
I wonder why she is so excited to come with me, "Why are you so happy that you are coming with me? I don't mind, of course, you just sound so excited."
"Well, the thing is Charlotte, I... I'm just happy that we've gotten so close that you're okay with showing me a side of you that no one else sees."
"I mean we have been living with each other for about a month now, and you're like my best friend, besides Ray." We both chuckle at that comment, "I will always be forever grateful towards you Stella, and I hope we continue being close friends for a very long time."
"Me too! I'm so glad you-" Her sentence got caught off by the school bell ringing letting everyone know school just ended.
"What? Sorry, I didn't hear that last part."
"Don't worry about it! Let's just hurry up and get going! We have to make sure we have plenty of time to get ready before Jason's party!" Stella grabs my hand and pulls me along till we are outside of the school.
"Woah, woah, woah. You know Jason's party doesn't start till 9? *giggles* I think we will have plenty of time, it just turned 3." I can't help but roll my eyes jokingly at Stella's actions.
"I know, I know, but like I said, it's a girls' night out, so we have so much to do before we even go to Jason's party."
"Alright, alright. Well let's just hurry up then to my old place and then we can start getting ready." Stella nods her head as she gets in my car.
We drive off and head over to my old place. Once we got there, I parked a bit away from the driveway, so I didn't alert my stepdad. "Hey Stella, I'll be right back. okay?" Stella looks worried but nods her head and stays in the car. I walk over to the mailbox, and of course, it's filled with a bunch of random things. Looks like he hasn't come out here to even look to see if we got any mail.
I started taking out a lot of mail, most of them say it's to Alan Grant. I finally came across the one with my name, " To Charlotte Baker. From: Arizona State University" I take this one and I shove the rest back in the mailbox.
I head back to my car, where Stella is waiting for me. Her eyes were glued to the front door of my old house. "I got it!!" Stella's eyes come back to me and the letter I'm holding in my hand. "Oh my gosh!! aren't you going to open it!?!"
"Let's open it when we get back to your place, okay? I don't want to be here anymore than I have to be." She nods understanding.
We drive off and head over to her place. Once we got back to her house, we both headed straight up to her room and sat on the bed. I start to open the envelope slowly, but I don't take the letter out just quite yet.
"Well, aren't you going to take out the letter?" Stella asked me with confusion written all over her face.
"Well... What if I don't get in? what am I supposed to do then?"
"Is that really what you're thinking?" I nod my head in response looking down, "Are you dumb?"
"Huh" I look back up her trying to figure out what she means.
"You heard me. Are you dumb?"
"I... don't... think so..."
"There is no way you're not accepted Charlotte. You are the smartest person in our school. you have a 4.0 GPA, no bad record. No detention. I only asked if you were dumb because only a dumb person would think that Charlotte Baker wouldn't get accepted into a college."
I couldn't help but smile. Stella always knew what to say. "You're right, all the hard work that I've put into it, there is no way I'm not accepted!"
I open the letter and I begin reading it out loud, "Dear Charlotte Baker, Congratulations! You have been accepted to Arizona State University! due to your academic records, we are offering you a full-ride scholarship for 4 years!!"
I stopped reading the letter and I looked up at Stella and we both screamed with joy. All of a sudden, the door slams open with Stella's dad holding a baseball bat and his reading glasses all crooked.
"WHAT'S WRONG?!?! IS THERE AN INTRUDER!?" Stella's dad exclaimed while looking around the room.
Me and Stella break down in laughter, "No Dad... We just got a bit too excited. Charlotte got offered a full-ride scholarship to ASU!" Her dad puts down the bat and fixes his glass. "Oh, that's good then." A sigh of relief escapes him as he leaves the room.
"Okay Charlotte, Let's get and get ready. And in celebration of your full-ride scholarship, next weekend we are going shopping!! And I'm paying for all of it!!"
"What?!"
"There is no way I'm letting my best friend go to a whole new place and wear those old baggy clothes! We are going to get rid of them all and get you a whole new wardrobe!"
I roll my eyes at her, "Fine, but only because I don't want to start college wearing donated clothes."
"Exactly! Now, let's get ready for that party!"
