Chapter 9: Loyalty Tested

1124 Words
The library was too quiet. Lyra stood in the center of the room, her wrists clenched in Marco’s iron grip, her heart pounding so hard she swore the men gathered around the table could hear it. Lucien sat at the head, a dark god carved in shadow. His grey eyes were unreadable, his expression a mask of calm that was more terrifying than any shout. She could feel the others watching her half with suspicion, half with open contempt. She was the outsider. The intruder. The flaw. And now, the accused. “She arrived out of nowhere,” one of the lieutenants said. His voice was smooth, practiced. And right after she did, our supply lines started bleeding. Men slaughtered, shipments intercepted. Coincidence?” Lyra’s stomach turned. Lucien’s gaze stayed on her. He hadn’t spoken since she entered. Not a single word. “She doesn’t belong here,” another voice growled. “She’s a distraction.” Worse a liability.” The words cut deep. But it wasn’t their voices that terrified her. It was his silence. Lucien Romano didn’t need to shout. His silence was a verdict waiting to fall. Finally, after what felt like hours, he spoke. “Leave us.” The command was quiet. Absolutely The men obeyed instantly, chairs scraping, footsteps fading. Even Marco hesitated before releasing her wrist and exiting, his glare promising that if Lucien didn’t cut her down, he gladly would. The door shut. And she was alone with the devil. Lucien rose slowly from his chair, every movement precise, controlled. He crossed the space between them with the grace of a predator. When he stopped in front of her, the silence was so thick it pressed against her skin. “Tell me,” he said at last, his voice soft and lethal, “Why do my men speak your name with suspicion?” Lyra swallowed hard. “Because they don’t know me.” “No.” His eyes narrowed. “Because there are leaks in my empire.” And you appeared at the exact moment they began.” Her chest tightened. “You think I’m feeding them information?” “I think…” His hand lifted, fingers brushing her jaw with deceptive gentleness. “… That I don’t know you at all. And in my world, not knowing is more dangerous than betrayal. Her breath hitched. “You’ve been hiding something since the night we met,” Lucien continued. “Your past." Your scars. The reason you flinch at shadows. Tell me, Lyra. Who are you really? Her throat burned. The words clawed at her, begging to be freed. But the memory of that voice on the phone echoed in her mind we remember what you did. If she told him everything, he might kill her. Or worse, use her past against her. But if she said nothing, he would never trust her. And without his trust, she was already dead. Tears pricked her eyes, hot and furious. “I’m not your enemy,” she whispered. Lucien’s gaze was merciless. “Then prove it.” The test came sooner than she could have imagined. The doors burst open, Marco rushing inside. “Boss,” he barked. “We’ve got company." The east wing perimeter breached.” Lyra stiffened. Lucien didn’t move at first. Then, slowly, his attention slid back to her. “Stay here.” “No,” she blurted, panic rising. “They’re here for me.” Both men turned to her. Her hands shook, but the truth spilled out before she could stop it. “The ones who called… they know me." They know what I did.” Marco swore. Lucien’s eyes sharpened with knives. “You led them here,” he said softly. “No!” she cried. “I didn’t, I swear, I didn’t." They found me. I don’t know how, but they did. Lucien’s expression was unreadable, his silence damning. Then gunfire shattered the night. The mansion erupted in chaos. Shouts, running footsteps, the thunder of weapons. Lucien snapped into motion, pulling a pistol from his holster, his voice a whip. “Marco.” With me.” Marco moved instantly, but Lucien’s hand shot out, catching Lyra’s wrist. His eyes burned into hers. “Stay close." If you run, you’re dead.” Her heart hammered. She nodded. And for the first time, Lucien dragged her into the fire. The east wing was a battlefield. Men in masks surged through shattered windows, guns blazing. Romano soldiers returned fire, the air thick with smoke and blood. Lucien moved like death itself, precise and merciless, every shot a kill. Lyra pressed against the wall, her body trembling, her mind screaming to shut down. But she couldn’t. Not now. Not when the past had finally bared its teeth. A masked man broke through the smoke, charging toward Lucien’s back. Without thinking, Lyra grabbed a fallen knife, her fingers white-knuckled around the hilt. She didn’t think. She just moved. The blade sank into the attacker’s side. He gasped, crumpling. Lyra stumbled back, the knife slick in her hand, her breath ragged. Lucien turned, eyes widening briefly as he took in the scene. Her trembling body. The man was bleeding at her feet. Something shifted in his gaze. Not suspicion. Not contempt. Something darker. Something like hunger. By the time the last body fell, the mansion was a ruin of smoke and blood. Lucien stood in the center of it all, his shirt stained, his face shadowed. Marco barked orders, men dragging corpses out, weapons clattering. Lyra stood frozen against the wall, the knife still in her hand, her body shaking uncontrollably. Lucien approached her slowly, like a man approaching a wild animal. He stopped just inches away, his gaze burning into hers. “You saved my life.” Her breath came fast, shallow. “I didn’t think.” I just." His hand closed over hers, prying the knife from her grip. His touch was firm, grounding. “You chose me,” he said softly. Her chest ached. “I didn’t choose.” “Yes,” he cut in, his voice rough. “You did." And now I’ll never forget it.” Later, in the silence of her room, Lucien stood with his back to her, his shirt discarded, the scars across his shoulders stark in the dim light. “You’ve been lying to me,” he said quietly. Lyra flinched. “But tonight… you proved something no lie could.” He turned, his eyes molten grey. You’re mine, Lyra. And you’ll stay that way. Her lips parted, her chest heaving. She should have felt chained. Instead, all she felt was fire. And in the darkest part of her heart, she knew she had just sealed her fate.
