SEEN WITH A LADY
Mary awoke to the sound of horses neighing in the street outside. She wiped her eyes and brushed herself down. Prepared herself for company. She had barely got to her feet when the latch moved and the door creaked open.
“All right, Mary?” Jake asked, before he was even in the room.
She grinned at the mere sight of him.
“I’ll take that to mean ‘yes’,” he smirked.
“Yer,” she agreed. “It was just like we said it would be.”
“Good girl” he remarked, draping an arm across her shoulders so he could pull her to him and plant a kiss on her cheek.
As soon as he released his hold on her, she stepped back.
“What am I doing here?” she asked. “You never mentioned this.”
He grabbed her hand and squeezed it. He threw her a cheeky grin. “Yer,” he soothed, “I know.”
