27 A GOOD COVER STORY As the weeks passed, Jake seemed to enjoy meeting Liza at the baby farm. He appeared to relish the thrill of almost getting caught. They were still dressing when they heard the heavy front door close, followed shortly by the click of Mary’s boots coming up the stairs. “When are yer comin’ back?” Liza shot at him, in a conspiratorial whisper. He stood by the door, tucking in his shirt. He looked across at her and smirked. “Dunno,” he said.
