Jake knew he was wanted. So he’d gone into hiding. He was mildly concerned that they might have something serious to charge him with.
He’d drawn people away from moneymaking enterprises in order to put more ears on the street. He needn’t have bothered. It was the urchins who were first with useful information. That was their thing.
“You was tracking policemen?” Jake repeated, not sure that he’d heard correctly.
“We just followed ‘em round in circles,” Jimmy agreed.
“Didn’t they see you?” Jake asked.
Jimmy looked hurt. “Nobody ever sees us,” he declared.
