43 REMORSE ISN’T ALWAYS INSTANT Inspector Wilder expected this clean-up would at last put paid to the worst of the deeply embedded criminals that were giving his patch of London such a bad name. He was determined to arrest as many of Jake’s g**g as possible. He knew that once they were behind bars, more tongues would start wagging. On Commercial Street, the police station was buzzing with activity. Officers were poring over lists of unsolved murders. They knew they were onto something big here. The assassin, the executioner, had been sought for so long, it was ironic that nobody had suspected they might be looking for a woman. She sat in her cell ignoring the eyes that kept peering in at her. Bastards, she kept thinking. They’re all bastards!
