Longing and Heartache

237 Words
Ava trudged through the school hallways, her eyes cast down at the floor. She hadn't been sleeping well, and the weight of her mom's divorce and her own unrequited feelings for Jake was taking a toll on her. As she turned a corner, she spotted Mia across the hallway. For a moment, they locked eyes, and Ava felt a pang of longing. She missed her best friend, missed the easy laughter and late-night conversations. Mia's eyes seemed to hold a similar sadness, and Ava wondered if she was thinking the same thing. But they didn't exchange words, didn't even acknowledge each other's presence. Ava continued on to her next class, feeling a lump form in her throat. She missed the comfort of Mia's friendship, the sense of security that came with having someone who understood her. After school, Ava went home to an empty house. Her mom was working late, trying to make ends meet after the divorce. Ava felt a wave of sadness wash over her as she thought about her family's situation. She thought about Jake, too, and how she couldn't seem to catch a break. Her heart felt heavy, weighed down by the pressures of her life. As she lay on her bed, staring at the ceiling, Ava felt tears prick at the corners of her eyes. She missed Mia and missed the way things used to be. She missed feeling happy and carefree.
