Chapter2: The End of the Beginning

1132 Words
The silence in the room was piercing enough to pierce through flesh. Isabella stood across from me, her cheeks flushed crimson, her hands holding the silk of her dress like it was the last anchor keeping her standing. I saw her chest rise and fall in unpredictable waves, the way prey does when realizing the predator is inches away. “You’re too calm,” she said, almost as if scolding me. “How can you stand there like nothing’s broken? I’d be tearing the walls apart if it were me.” I inclined my head, my voice a controlled murmur that burned with edges. “Because screaming won’t erase what’s already been done.” Her lip twitched. “Celeste, he brought her into your home. Into your bed.” The words slashed into me, not because they were new but because hearing them aloud was like forcing a sword into a wound I had forced myself to ignore. My fingertips brushed over the smooth surface of the mahogany table beside me, centring myself. The memories threatened to choke meshadows of perfume that wasn’t mine clinging on linens, a hint of laughter echoing down the hallway when I had returned late from a charity banquet, only to find the door locked. My own door. “I know,” I said simply. Her eyes widened. “You knew?” A bitter laugh threatened to explode, but I gulped it down. “Of course I knew. Do you think women like me ever truly live blind? No, Isabella. We learn to see even what we wish we could unsee.” The room got thick with quiet. Isabella’s rage blazed in my way suddenly, fierce and mistaken. “Then why stay? Why suffer it? Why let him walk all over you like you’re disposable?” I turned slowly, my gaze locking onto hers with a tranquility that was anything but weak. “Because survival requires sacrifice. And every sacrifice I made was for something bigger than him or me.” Flashbacks flooded me, sharp and cruel. I remembered the chilly evenings I spent creating contracts that protected his empire from disaster, the friends I won at meals where I was nothing but ornamental, the smile I plastered on my face while whispers of his infidelity traveled through the halls of high society. My body may have become a wife’s, but my spirit had been chiselled into a shield to protect what was mine. Isabella’s voice trembled, quiet now. “You gave up everything for him, didn’t you?” I breathed slowly, steadying myself against the tremble in my chest. “I gave up on myself.” The sound of footsteps in the hallway made both our heads turn. For a second, I wondered if he would come in, cocky and defiant. Instead, quiet followed, growing into something smothering. “Celeste,” Isabella said, leaning closer, “this isn’t strength. This is slow suicide.” Her words sparked something fierce in me, a fire I had been suppressing for years. I straightened, my spine a line of iron. “No. This is waiting. And patience is often regarded as weakness until it strikes.” Her eyes searched mine, and for the first time, I felt fear in them not for me, but of what I may be capable of. “You don’t understand,” I continued, my voice low and angry. “He thinks betrayal is a game. But he doesn’t know he’s been playing on my board all along.” A flash of confusion crossed her features. “What are you saying?” Before I could answer, a memory broke through his hand wrapped around another woman’s waist as I stood across the floor, champagne glass shaking but never dropping, a smile affixed to my lips. The humiliation was public, but the hate it caused was secret, hidden deep where no one could reach it. Until now. I caught Isabella’s eyes again. “Do you know what happens when you strip a woman of everything she once cherished? You leave her with nothing to lose. And nothing to lose is the most dangerous tool of all.” She recoiled slightly at the fury in my tone, her voice a whisper. “Celeste… what are you planning?” I let quiet hang in the air. A storm roared behind my sternum, yet visibly, I was ice. I walked toward the dresser at the corner of the room, my fingers reaching for the gold band around my ring. The weight of it had been both chain and defense, but at this moment, it was neither. “You asked me why I stayed.” My voice trembled not with weakness, but with restrained rage. Slowly, slowly, I took the ring off. The steel scrape against my skin was louder than thunder in my ears. I held it for a minute, looking at the symbol of years wasted, of promises torn in silence. Then I laid it down with a determined clink on the dresser. Isabella gasped. “Celeste…” Without further word, I turned and crossed the room, my heels clicking against the marble floor. I crouched at the hidden panel near the closest place only I knew existed. My heart thundered as my fingers pressed against the fake wood, releasing the latch with a quiet click. Isabella’s voice shook. “What are you doing?” I didn’t answer. Instead, I opened the little safe, its dark yawning like a secret screaming to be revealed. My hand crept inside, brushing past cold steel and thick packages, until it reached what it sought. A small, stylish USB. Isabella came closer, her breath catching as I took it out. Her eyes were shocked at the label scrawled in my handwriting: KX SECRETS. She whispered, shocked. “What is that?” I turned to her carefully, the USB gripped lightly between my fingers like a weapon hidden in plastic. My lips curled into something between a smile and a scar. “This,” I answered, voice low and cool, “is the beginning of his end.” Her hand shot to her mouth, but I didn’t give her time to answer. My eyes burned with the fire of everything I had suppressed for yearspain, betrayal, hate, but also something far more scary. Resolve. And as I locked the safe, the room appeared to shrink around us, stifling with secrets, with finds neither of us could yet understand. The hush broke only when I mumbled, more to myself than to her: “He thinks he broke me. But he doesn’t realize… I was never his to break.” The USB glinted beneath the chandelier light, weighted with facts that could raze civilizations. And with that, the line between wife and vengeance blurred forever.
