Chapter 7

The g**g leader shattered the tension and lunged forward with an iron pipe aimed straight at the skull of his enemy. The scavenger screamed with rage while he swung the weapon through the air of the underground cavern. Dante did not blink or step backward when the strike descended toward his face in the dim light. He channeled ten years of anger and slipped beneath the arc of the weapon with a fluid motion born in the prison yard. The pipe sliced through the space where his head had been just a fraction of a second before. He stepped into the vulnerable guard of the leader and drove a fist into the center of his chest. The crushing impact cracked ribs and forced all the air from the lungs of the scavenger in one violent exhale. The g**g leader dropped his weapon and collapsed to his knees while he gasped for a breath that refused to come. Dante refused to offer mercy to a man who wanted to feed him to the rats for a bag of electronics. He grabbed the leader by the collar and delivered a knee strike to his face that echoed throughout the maintenance hub. The violence of the counterattack painted a picture of absolute dominance for the dozen men watching from the shadows. The g**g leader crumpled against the concrete floor and lay motionless in a pool of his own blood. Dante turned his scarred face toward the remaining scavengers and let the monster inside him break through his calm exterior. He dared any of them to step forward and meet the exact same fate as the man bleeding at his boots. The circle of thugs looked at the destruction and felt their false courage evaporate into the damp air. They dropped their weapons and scrambled toward the tunnels like prey fleeing from a flood. The echoing sound of their footsteps faded into the depths until silence returned to the subterranean fortress. "Secure the blast doors and make sure they did not leave any traps behind in the dark," Dante ordered while he watched the last scavenger disappear. He felt the combat adrenaline recede from his veins and leave behind a profound exhaustion that settled deep into his bones. The hub belonged to them now and it provided the foundation he needed to begin his war against Victor Carmine. Kwame rushed toward the steel entrance and engaged the manual locking mechanisms with a loud metallic clang. The quartermaster leaned against the barrier and let out a long breath of relief after surviving another close brush with death. They had carved out a sanctuary in the dirt but the battle to reclaim a stolen family had not even started yet. Dante walked across the cavern and began dragging broken crates and rusted debris away from the command area. He needed to keep his hands moving to prevent his mind from drifting back to the image of Elena standing with his worst enemy. Every piece of trash he threw aside represented another barrier he planned to destroy in his path to find the son he never knew. He pictured the young boy sleeping in a mansion under the roof of a man who built an empire on lies and murder. The agonizing thought of his own blood calling Victor father drove Dante to clear the junk with a relentless energy. He swore to build a new world from this underground tomb and present it to the family that had been ripped from his grasp. "Set up the monitors and find a way into the syndicate surveillance network," Dante instructed while he cleared a concrete table in the center of the room. "We need to know every move Victor makes before he realizes the ghost from his past is breathing down his neck." He watched Kwame unpack the bag and arrange the tech with practiced hands. The quartermaster worked in silence while he connected the hardware to the independent power grid running beneath the industrial zone. The glow of the computer screens illuminated the dark bunker and brought a spark of life into the forgotten tomb. Kwame typed a rapid sequence of commands to establish their untraceable connection to the outside world without triggering alarms. Dante stood behind his friend and stared at the lines of code cascading down the main monitor with a sense of grim anticipation. He knew Victor possessed massive resources but the usurper lacked the street level ingenuity that Kwame brought to their crusade. The young genius bypassed the outer firewalls of the Carmine empire and tapped straight into the private security grid of the syndicate. "I am inside the network and I am downloading the architectural blueprints for all his major cash fronts right now," Kwame announced with a hint of pride. He opened several encrypted files and began sorting through the vast amounts of data regarding the criminal operations across the city. The screen displayed a complex map of the districts dotted with markers representing the locations Victor controlled. Dante felt a surge of hope watching the empire laid bare before him because he knew the exact place to strike to cause maximum pain. He wanted to hit the extortion rackets first to cut off the bottom line and force his enemy into a state of paranoia. "Filter the locations and find the primary hub where he moves his street cash before the laundering process begins," Dante commanded. Kwame adjusted his search parameters and zoomed the map onto a specific industrial sector located on the edge of the river. The screen flickered and brought up a live camera feed of a commercial meatpacking plant surrounded by a high fence. The quartermaster stared at the flashing location marker and leaned closer to the monitor with a look of pure confusion. Dante leaned over the shoulder of the quartermaster and scrutinized the digital feeds broadcasting the perimeter of the facility. The security forces patrolling the exterior carried assault rifles and wore tactical gear that seemed excessive for a simple money collection point. The sheer amount of protection indicated something far more valuable than cash resided inside the walls of the brick building tonight. "This makes no sense at all because this facility should be a ghost town at this hour of the night," Kwame whispered while he analyzed the data stream. He tapped another key and brought up a secondary camera angle showing the parking lot of the guarded extortion hub. The young man froze in his chair and swore under his breath while he pointed a trembling finger at the glowing screen.
