Chapter 5: The Sabotage

1526 Words
Emily was aware that her increasing intimacy with Ethan would cause conflict, particularly with her sister Jade. Jade was always eager to outdo Emily and would seize any chance to do so. But Emily was not going to let anyone dictate her happiness, especially her sister or her ex-fiance Liam. Emily was standing in her grandfather's study in the late afternoon, her eyes narrowing as she heard Senior Parker's rough voice. "Emily, the Parker Empire depends on this merger. Liam has returned to your life at just the right time. This is your chance, and you must seize it. He spoke in a stern, cold tone. Emily clenched her fists, her frustration barely contained. She was sick of hearing about corporate alliances and mergers. Her grandfather's well-thought-out move to pair her with Liam had nothing to do with love. "Grandfather, I understand the importance of the merger, but I will not be forced into a relationship that does not make sense to me," she stated firmly. Senior Parker was clearly disappointed, as his eyes hardened. "You have always been the one who was stubborn. Emily, never forget that family comes first. Jade will gladly step in if you do not follow through." Emily was determined not to give in. "Let her go if that is what it takes," she said, before taking off on her heels and walking away. Emily's phone vibrated as she approached her car. Ethan sent a message saying, "Meet me at the project site later. I have something I would like to show you. For a brief moment, the tension vanished as a smile tugged at her lips. Amidst her family's oppressive expectations, Ethan provided a welcome change of pace. Emily found the project site to be less busy than usual. The construction site was glowing warmly under the golden rays of the setting sun, but the workers had left for the day. She noticed Ethan with a satisfied expression standing next to one of the partially constructed buildings. Approaching him, Emily said, "Hey." Ethan smiled as he turned. "Hello, you made it. Come on, let me show you what we accomplished today." Emily followed him around the site, watching the progress. Seeing the community center take shape brought a sense of fulfillment because it was something that would positively impact people's lives. Compared to the meaningless, financially motivated projects her family typically funded, this one was very different. Ethan took her to a recently finished room that had big windows overlooking the neighborhood. "This will be the primary area for gatherings," With a gleam in his eyes, Ethan exclaimed. "We want it to be a meeting place where people can socialize, share ideas, and feel like they belong to a real community." The entire facility will revolve around it. Imagine kids having fun here and families getting together on special occasions." Emily looked out the large windows and felt mixed emotions fill her heart. There was something genuine about this project, and about Ethan in particular. For the first time in a long time, she felt that she was making a meaningful contribution to something other than her family's never-ending pursuit of power and fortune. Emily turned to face Ethan and murmured, "Ethan, this is amazing." "You have done so much here, I am glad to be involved." Despite his hesitant expression, Ethan smiled. He studied her for a long time before taking a step towards her. Emily, without you, I would not have completed this." The intensity of his stare made Emily's heart skip a beat and her breath catch. They shared a silent moment, imbued with an unspoken bond. She was afraid that her feelings for Ethan were becoming stronger. She had never let herself become weak or depend on anyone but herself. But with Ethan, things were different. She inhaled deeply, her voice hardly audible. "You know, you are one of the few individuals who truly gets who I am. Not the businesswoman, not the Parker heiresses. Just... Emily." Gently, Ethan reached out and brushed a lock of hair behind her ear. This is due to the fact that you are more than just a name or title. You are kinder, more passionate, and stronger than you realize. Emily, I see you." She felt a warmth in her chest from his genuineness, and before she could stop herself, she leaned in. As their lips gently touched, everything else vanished, including the pressure, the expectations, and the worry about what her family would do. It was only her and Ethan. As they withdrew, Emily met his eyes and, for the first time in years, felt hope. However, that emotion did not last long. Her phone immediately rang, and it was a call from her secretary informing her that there is an emergency meeting at the office right away. Emily looked at Ethan's disappointed expression, knowing he did not want to let her go. However, there will be a next time. Gaining confidence, Emily entered the Parker Empire's office. If it meant going against her grandfather's wishes, she was determined to take charge of her life. But there was a stir in the hallway as she got closer to her office. Employees whispered to one another, their gazes moving between her and the conference room. Emily scowled, her gut feeling already very suspicious. She felt her heart sink as she pushed open the conference room door. Liam was there, in front of a group of high-level managers. He was grinning confidently, and Jade was standing next to him with a composed expression of contentment. "Emily," Liam said with a falsely affectionate tone in his voice. "I was just updating everyone on our engagement plans. I felt it was time for us to formally announce it." Emily felt a wave of anger rise within her as her eyes widened in shock. Her sister's arrogant smile made her even more enraged as she turned to face Jade. Jade, what is this? Emily made her demand in a threatening, low voice. Jade shrugged, hate shining in her eyes. Emily, I am just trying to do what is best for the family. Grandfather believes it is time for you to get over your... distraction." Emily tightened her jaw and turned to look at Liam. "This is not true. With a firmness in her voice that left no room for doubt, she declared, "There is no engagement." For an instant, Liam's smile wavered, but it soon came back. "Come on, Emily. We have been a good fit from the beginning. You understand how crucial it is that the merger will benefits both of our families. Emily could sense the executives' scrutiny and discernible disapproval. With a firm voice, she stepped forward. "I refuse to be coerced into anything, especially not a fake engagement. You have no business being involved in my personal life, and I refuse to be used as a pawn by anyone." The executives whispered to one another, a few glancing at one another nervously. Jade's eyes narrowed at Emily as her smile faded. "Sister, you are making a mistake. A huge one." Emily turned to look at her sister with a determined expression. "Letting any of you control my life would be the only mistake I ever made." Emily turned and left the conference room without saying anything more, her heart racing. This was not over yet, she knew. Liam and Jade would not be easily defeated, and her grandfather would undoubtedly be furious. But enough of being manipulated. Emily's phone vibrated with a message as soon as she walked into her office. It was from Ethan: "Give me a call when you have some time. I have something important to tell you. Emily felt uneasiness creep in and her chest tighten. She called Ethan, and he answered almost right away. "Emily," Ethan said in a tense voice, and she could tell he was worried. "You must exercise caution. I recently learned that the community project is being targeted for sabotage. Funding is being withheld, and there are reports of poor management." Emily felt her heart race. She was certain of the person responsible for this. Now that Jade and Liam were intensifying their strategies, they were going after something that actually mattered to her—something that Emily cared about. "Do not worry, Ethan," she said, her voice determined. "They cannot defeat me. I will take care of this." Ethan paused for a brief instant. "Emily, just assure me that you will use caution. I do not want you to get hurt because of the dirty games they are playing. Emily closed her eyes, determination taking hold. "I promise." But one thing they must realize is that I will not give up this time." Emily realized as she hung up the phone that this was only the beginning. Her family was willing to go to any length to keep her under control, but they had no idea how strong she really was. She was no longer the submissive heiress they had assumed she was. She is prepared for war and will do whatever it takes to protect those she cares about.
