CHAPTER 2 : The Wrong Mistress NAOMI I shut the door and hurried out quickly down the corridor, I couldn’t let Alexander see how much his words had hurt me. The thought of him spending the night with another woman was enough to make my chest ache. I imagined what they would do? He might… What was I thinking? I pushed the thought away He was my stepbrother. My stepbrother for f**k sake Naomi. “Naomi.” I kept walking. “Naomi!” I turned, realizing Marcus had been calling me. He stood a few steps behind me, watching with a puzzled expression. “What’s wrong?” he asked. “Nothing” I bit the inner part of my lips till I tasted blood. He looked around closely before pulling me closer for a hug from behind “are you sure?” He exhaled sharply “you can tell me anything Naomi” I stared at him, shame creeping up. How could I tell my boyfriend that I didn't feel anything for him, that his touches weren't enough to make me stop remembering my ste brother “Nothing, I'm just tired” I lied, hugging him tighter so maybe he would not realise how destroyed I was. He studied me carefully “ let me take you quiet” he said pressing a kiss on my forehead “just me and you, just so you could forget everything…” “Mhmmm” I chucked despite barely hearing him Without another word, he dragged me down the stairs checking to be sure nobody was watching “Come on” Marcus led me down the stairs and through a quiet passage. He glanced over his shoulder twice before stopping outside my room. “Are you sure nobody saw us?” I whispered. “Relax, Naomi.” He gave me a small smile. “I checked.” He slipped inside, and I followed, closing the door behind us. For a moment, he simply held me as I rested my cheek against his chest, trying to focus on the familiar comfort of his arms. Trying to remember that Marcus was all that I had and needed. He had been there when my mother died. When the king turned his back on me. When the servants began treating me like I was less than them because I had no wolf. He had sat beside me when I cried and promised I wouldn’t always be alone. “You remember what I told you?” he asked planting another kiss on my cheek gently I lifted my head. “What?” “That one day, I’ll make you my Luna.” His words should have made me happy that we wouldn't have to hide our relationship from Gordon, the king's best friend and beta We would be happy together forever, without hiding it from the world “I remember,” I murmured. He brushed a strand of hair away from my face. “I mean it. I just need the right time to tell my father about us.” I nodded, though a knot tightened in my stomach. We had been keeping our relationship secret for so long that I sometimes wondered if the right time would ever come. Marcus kissed my lips, moving his hands gently upward on my thighs “I love you Naomi” “I love you too” I forced the words out of my lips. “I have duties to attend to,” he said. “But we’ll spend more time together soon. Just you and me.” “Okay.” He pulled me closer for the last time before kissing me hungrily. “I need to hurry out so my father doesn't find me here” he said, giving my hand one last squeeze before slipping out. I cared about Marcus. He had been there when everyone else abandoned me but whenever he touched me, I found myself wishing he were someone else. Sometimes, I wondered if I was holding on to Marcus because I loved him or because I was afraid of being alone again. He was kind to me, and he had never made me feel ashamed of being wolfless. I should have been grateful for that. But whenever I imagined our future together, I felt nothing close to the excitement I experienced whenever Alexander called my name. I glanced at the clock. Midnight was approaching. Before the poisoning, he had a reputation for entertaining different women, never keeping one around long enough for anyone to believe he was serious. But since losing his sight, he had become withdrawn, allowing only a few people close to him. Asha was one of them. Rumour had it that she hoped to become his Luna, though Alexander had never publicly promised her anything. I had seen them together often enough to know that Alexander tolerated her company in a way he rarely tolerated anyone else's. She visited his chambers regularly in secret, and he never seemed particularly eager to send her away. I hated that I had noticed such things. I hated even more that I remembered every little detail. I should have been relieved. If he wanted Asha, then there was no reason for me to keep hoping for something that could never happen. Yet the thought of them spending the night together made something bitter twist inside me. Alexander expected Asha to be in his chambers soon, and I was supposed to make sure nobody discovered their meeting. I should have gone to find her. Instead, an impossible thought crept into my mind. What if I went in her place? My heart hammered against my ribs. Alexander was blind, and if I kept the room dark, he might not realize I wasn't Asha. But what if he recognized my voice? I hesitated, my fingers tightening around the fabric of my skirt. This was foolish. Reckless. If he discovered what I was doing, I could lose everything. Yet the thought of him spending the night with Asha was unbearable. I straightened my dress and stepped outside. Just one night, I told myself. One night to discover what it felt like to be wanted by him. Afterward, I would forget him forever.
