Rachael's POV.
"Hey I'll be stepping out for a while. I'll be back before lunch break is over." I said to Brent from outside his office through the open door. He nodded and waved me away occupied by what it was he was doing. I left the bar after grabbing my bag and phone and throwing my apron and card in the locker. I had told Satisha to stand in for me and she agreed on the condition that I put in a good word for her to the boss. Word had it that she had a thing for the biracial boss, Brent.
My dad pulled up few minutes later in front of the bar and I climbed into the passenger seat. He drove off in the direction of the publishing firm and parked in the lot.
"Goodluck honey. Call me when you're done." My dad gave me two thumbs and I smiled in thanks. I took deep breaths before walking into the building. I took the stairs to the 2nd floor and walked up to the receptionist. I was about to speak up when he stepped out.
"Ah! Miss Davies. Right on time, do follow me." Mr Cavali smiled and gestured for me to step into his office.
"Have a seat." He motioned to one of the two chairs in front of his desk and I nodded before sitting, placing my bag on the floor.
"So may I see what you have? I'm so excited." He beamed like a toddler clapping his hands together like I have a lolly with me. I chuckled bringing out the bulky manuscripts I've been working on. I handed him three manuscripts that I worked on over the years when I was still in college. He took them from me and put on his glasses before staring closely at them. His expression was blank and his forehead creased as he went through my write-ups making it hard for me to decipher his expressions. I sat quietly waiting patiently for him to speak up. He cleared his throat after a few minutes before looking up.
"Hmm... I like—No, I love them! These are very good for drafts, they needs lots of editing but I see a lot of potential in them. My team and I will follow up on this immediately. The dialogue manuscript will be taken to film makers for review and I'll let you know when it get accepted. The kids story would be published right away since it needs little editing and the last one would be reviewed and corrected but we won't alter its originality so no need to worry. We just need to sign some documents to seal this deal," he said all at once and a wide smile broke out on my face from genuine happiness and total relief. He conversed with his assistant through landline, ordering her to draw up a contract and he gives her its contents before hanging up. She brought in the documents few minutes later and I signed in the specified boxes before it was filed away.
We talked about some other minor information and random topics before we ended the meeting. I called my dad and he showed up in about a minute.
"Dad... Did you wait the whole time?" I asked suspiciously.
"No! No. I didn't... Why?" He replied.
"I know you did but I told you to go and that I was going to call you once the meeting ended. So you missed work for two hours doing absolutely nothing here." I scolded him and he smiled ruffling my hair.
"Sorry Rach. So how'd it go?" He asked and my frown immediately turned into a smile.
I told him about the meeting from when I stepped into the office to when I stepped out. He hugged me and yammered on how proud he was of me and what I was about to accomplish. I just smiled and picked up my phone to call Brent that I ran a little late but I was on my way back.
My dad dropped me off and I shooed him off to work. I stepped into the bar and quickly went to the locker room to put away my purse and phone and grab my apron before going back out. I got to the main bar and I wiped down the tables. I was at the bar conversing with Pecos, the bartender, when the bar door opened and the last person I wanted to see walked in. I quickly excused myself from the conversation to run into the locker room for the time they were in the bar but my usual routine failed this time.
"Rachael, your table." Brent said suddenly stopping in front of me and pointing to the table that just got occupied by three tatted up cowboys. He then turned and headed back up to his office. I swallowed the spit pooling in my mouth and gave a fake smile. I went to the bar and grabbed the order pad and a pen. Pecos grinned at me and I rolled my eyes. He was the only one that saw through my whole act every time. He knew I avoided Drew because I always left the main bar every time he stepped into the bar.
"Not today dear." He grinned.
"Whatever." I sneered at him and he laughed.
I walked the few steps to the table and cleared my throat before speaking up.
"Hello. What would you like me to get for you?" I asked the men and they looked up. Drew's face immediately lit up like a thousand watts bulb on seeing me I guess. I rolled my eyes and turned my attention to his friends. They chuckled at this and told me their orders. I quickly penned it down and turned to leave the table.
"Hey... You didn't take my order." Drew asked confused and I replied over my shoulder.
"I know what you always get. The girls wouldn't shut up about it." I scoffed and walked away. I heard mocking laughs from the table but I didn’t look back.
I sighed on getting to the bar and I threw the pad across the table to Pecos. He quickly scanned it and puts it aside, setting up beer glasses and putting different drinks into it. I set everything on a tray when he was done and took it over to their table. I served each of them their order and left the table cutting off what Drew wanted to say.
I excused myself from the bar and escaping into the locker room to organize my thoughts. Stupid me thinking I could avoid him forever. I knew my little act would come to an end one day but I wasn't ready to talk to him. He had literally been in my face for the past two weeks doing everything possible to get me to notice him but I turned a blind eye to all his advances. He's bad news for me and even though I didn’t care for him, I wouldn't want my dad getting the wrong idea if he found me talking to him.
"Hello." Somebody said suddenly tapping my shoulder abruptly.
I jumped three feet into the air and let out a shrill cry of fear, my heart racing really fast. I turned around to see Drew grinning at me and my fear immediately turned to anger.
"What the..... You scared me! Jeez!" I yell glaring so hard at him.
"Sorry I didn't mean to." He apologized
"Whatever you can't be in here. If the boss finds you here I'll get into trouble." I said pushing him out and what he said next had me stopping in my tracks.
"Oh its no problem. My brother owns this place." He said and grinned again and I internally face palmed.
Oh no!
Drew's POV.
I watched her backside sway slightly as she walked away swiftly exiting the main bar area and disappearing into the break room. It was eyely that she was trying so hard to avoid me for reasons only she knew. I'd been trying my damnedest to get her to notice me and my motives but she's turned a blind eye to all my advances.
I stood up from the chair impulsively without thinking and Wolfe held me back.
"Do you think its a good idea. I think you should wait a while longer. She would come around." Wolfe said and I sighed raising my voice a bit too high out of frustration.
"But when will this be?! Its been two weeks man... Two long weeks. I don't think she would come around, I think I have to pop up everywhere she is to get her to notice me." I replied him and he nodded releasing his light grip on my triceps.
"Whatever you say boss." He held both his arms up in surrender and urged me to go after her. I left the room and entered the narrow hallway leading to the break room. I peeped through the broken part of the frosted glass to find her standing in the middle of the room. Her cute features scrunched up as if in deep thought. I greedily committed her face to my memory as I didn’t know the next time I would get the luxury of seeing her calm.
After what felt like hours but was only minutes I decided to make my presence known to her. Staring at her made me feel like a creepy pervert and an obsessed stalker. I opened the door gently so as not to startle her but she doesn't seem to notice my entry as she was lost in her subconscious.
Hello." I stepped closer to her closing the gap of a few centimetres and I tapped her shoulder.
She jumped high into the air and let out a shrill cry of fear. I was tempted to laugh at how frightened she looked but I held back any jesting expression from my face trying to maintain a blank face which was not as easy as it sounded.
"What the..... You scared me! Jeez!" She yelled glaring so hard at me.
"Sorry I didn't mean to." I apologized and smile
"Whatever you can't be in here. If the boss finds you here I'll get into trouble." She relayed pushing me out. I blurted out the next sentence that came to mind with utter confidence unaware of the adverse effect it would have on Rachel.
"Oh its no problem. My brother owns this place." I smiled proudly and a horrified look pervaded her face but it was quickly wiped off before she turned frantic and forced me out of the room. My eyebrows scrunched up in confusion wondering what the heck just happened. I thought she was going to be impressed I was brother's with her boss, at least the other girls were on me like white on rice when they found out Brent was my brother.
I didn’t consider them in that light again though. They all looked like ogres to me with Rachel as Princess Fiona.
"Why were you in there?" Brent asked peering into the room and he further added
"—with Rachel… Any luck?" He asked and I rubbed my hands on my face severally.
"I think I f****d up bro. Lets go to your office." I said and he nodded leading the way.
I recounted the conversation that took place between Rachel and I in the room to him and he stared at me like I was stupid.
"What?!" I exclaimed.
"You don't just blurt out information like that. They make the good ones turn the other way and the bad ones flock closer." He advised.
"Wait how did you find out about us?" I asked suddenly and he looked at me like I was dumb this time.
"I bet everyone in this bar knows your newest interest. And seeing you two just confirmed it."
"Well please I need your help. You can as well help me if you know." I pleaded and he nodded.
"Sure how can I help?" He asked and my brain went into action trying to conjure up a plan and think of a way to get the both of us in the same place. An idea suddenly hit me and there was no better feeling than this.
I went over my plan with Brent and he was skeptical about it but in the end, he agreed to it. I left his office and joined my friends in the main bar area to finish up my drink and chat with them. Rachel was already out and working but she avoided any contact with me and stayed far away from my table. I could still spot traces of anxiety on her face but she did well to hide it from others but having being the one to throw her into such distress I could see how deeply it had affected her.
"How did it go?" Wolfe asked me drawing me from my brief thoughts.
"Well...” I started and they both burst into laughter.
"What the f**k is funny?!" I frained.
"We know you f****d things up man. You've been hit with the feels now you are love screwed." Dawg said and they both burst into laughter again.
'The stupid friends I keep.' I thought to myself.
"So what exactly did you say wrong?" Drew asked me.
"I blurted out Brent was my brother. I thought it would impress her." I sighed at my outright failure and evident retardation. They just stared at me before bursting in fits of laughter.
"Oh my! Boss, I didn't think this day would come where you would be in love." Dawg said and I scoffed.
"I'm not in love. I just want from her what I've gotten from the other girls. For some reason they don't appeal to my libido anymore." I said and they smirked but didn’t utter another word.
We finished our drinks and I went over to the bar to settle the bill instead of waving the bar guy over. Rachel laughed really hard at something Pecos had said and I felt a great urge to punch him square in the jaw for making her happy when I couldn’t.
"My bill Pecos." I said brusquely and he nodded grabbing the tab and putting our bill. I saw Rachel shift uncomfortably trying to manoeuvre her way from in front of me. I unintentionally caged her to the bar by standing behind her. I settle the bill with Rachel still caged in front of me and I leaned down to whisper in her ear;
"Not long my love." I noticed the slight shivers that ran up her body at my words making me smirk as my boys and I exited the bar.
