Chapter 2

Rachel's POV. "So this is the new library. T'was built a few years back by the current mayor. It also has an e-library and unlimited internet access for the whole town." My dad said with his hand outside the window pointing to a huge bungalow building across from where we were parked. "Looks cool to me. I could use some reading and writing time occasionally." I replied. He hummed and started the car, driving to our next tour point. This was our routine for about a week. I was in town for about two weeks and I had to admit I liked it. I rested for the first two days, unpacking my luggage. Then the day after, I started my grand tour round the town to see both old and new places with my dad being the tour guide of course. It was a lot of fun touring the town. He took me to his work on the first day. I got to meet his coworkers and they were really nice and welcoming. We also visited the fire station, although I had no idea why that was even tour worthy but he insisted that I had to meet the brave men who risked their lives to save people─his words not mine. We went to the supermarket after that and we bought a few groceries as I wasn’t comfortable with eyes shopping ( mind you it’s the only store in the town). Next we visited the church, the game center, the gym, the lounge and I heard they were all owned by the richest brothers in town excluding the church. I guess he called them the Callaway's or Callaghan's. We also went to the lovers ground by the lake which was cute. It had like a small gate where you could put your love locks and then throw the key into the lake sealing your love forever. All round, it was a great tour. After a few more stops and meet and greet, the organisms in our stomach kicked off a tour of their own and our stomachs began to rumble, making a lot of noise. "I'm hungry..." "I think we should stop for lunch." My dad and I said at the same time. We looked at each other and then burst into laughter. "Well I could eat. I'm really hungry." My dad said and I replied with a "yeah me too." I unlocked my phone replying a few messages from my best friend Paisley. I missed her a whole lot. She was devastated when I told her I had to move back to shadow creek. She even offered to move with me as both her parents are deceased but I couldn't let her do that. She had plans. We both did but I had to move for my dad. She wanted to become a worldwide artists hosting lots of exhibitions but she wouldn't achieve all that at shadow creek. After a bucket full of tears and heated arguments she finally agreed to stay back but made me promise to text and call every day. "We're here Rach." My dad said, shutting off the car. "Where is here?" I asked as I unbuckled my seat belt. I picked up my clutch bag from the glove compartment. "Here is where you get the best chicken, spaghetti, sauces, soups, breads, fries and all foods in the whole world. Here is the one and only pops diner—home of the most amazing dishes. God! I'm salivating just talking about it. Let’s go in." My dad said making me chuckle. We made our way across the parking lot to the entrance of the diner. ‘Forever the foodie,’ I thought to myself. The door rang as we pushed it. A round, average height man with a round protruding belly and grey hair and beards looked up from where he was wiping a table and his face lit up like a 360 watt bulb. "Hey pops." My dad greeted. He led us to the first booth and his face mirrored the same wide excited smile that was on pops’ face. "Hey sheriff. How ya doin'? I ain't seen ya face 'round here in a while. Work beatin' you down?" He asked my dad as he walked over to our table. He handed us two menus before patting my dad on the back. "Yeah. Work has been stressful lately. Crime rate went up in baton rouge so I had to offer my support to their police team over there." I zoned them out as I scanned the menu for what to order. All the dishes on the menu looked good to me but the spaghetti and sauce with chicken strips looked best. I ordered that with a sprite. My dad ordered plantain as main with a bunch of weird side dishes to it. "Pops meet my daughter Rachel. Rach this is pops. He owns the diner." My dad said handling the introductions. "Hi pops. Nice to meet ya." I smiled hoping the bright smile on my face matched the megawatt one on his. I could swear the old man smiled a lot with all the smile lines on his face. "Nice too meet ya too young lady. The last time I saw you, you were just a lass but look at ya all grown up looking as beautiful as your mother. Bless her soul. Feel free to come in here any time you want. You're always welcome." He said. "Thanks pops." "So what are the both of ya getting? And don't worry it’s on the house." My dad groaned, refusing his offer claiming he could pay for both our foods. Pops rejected his offer to pay insisting it was a welcome meal for me and they went back and forth bickering like children. I let out an amused chuckle making them both stop and smile with blood in their white faces. Pop took our orders leaving us to get our food and drinks. My dad had no choice but to accept pops offer in the end with the resolve to leave a huge tip in the tip jar on our way out but then pops was smarter and took the tip jar off the counter. One for pops; zero for my dad. My dad and I were in the living room that night, with him watching his favorite night time show and me reading my novel. "Rach, there’s something I've been meaning to ask you,” My dad started and the tone of the conversation wasn't the usual chatty kind. I put a book card in the page I was at before closing the book to give him my full attention. "What’s up dad?" "I was wondering what you want to do now concerning work and you know, your future. I know you wanted to work in an editorial firm in the city and I'm sorry you had to leave all that to move here for me. There are not a lot of opportunities here in shadow creek but I want you to know that I'm gonna support whatever decision you make." My dad said to me and I smiled, squeezing his hand as a sign of emotional support. I knew he felt guilty about me sacrificing my dreams to move back here but I didn't blame him for it. It was my choice and I wanted him to know that. "Dad you know I love you and I don't blame you for anything. I made a choice to move here and be there for you. It was my choice and I don't regret taking that huge step. And you'd make me regret it by feeling guilty, so please don't blame yourself─" "─And concerning work I really don't know but I saw this bar in town on our way to the library. I was thinking I could check it out and if there is a spot for a barmaid I could take it. And before you say anything, I think it would be good because I get to have a lot of free time that I could dedicate to writing my books. I could have worked at the library but I saw how equipped it was with enough staff. I wouldn’t want to be a dormant addition to the team." I said to him hoping he agreed without a fight. I knew being a barmaid wasn't the best job for a fresh college graduate but I was willing to try. "Okay honey. If that's your wish then I accept. I know the owner of the bar. I could speak to him if you like." He said after a pause of a few seconds. I let out a sigh of relief. "That would be great dad. Thank you." I replied. He got up to retire for the night planting a chaste kiss on my forehead before heading up to his room. I turned on the alarm system and switched off all the lights in the main wing of the house before heading up to my room for the night. ************************ Drew's POV "Hey brother. What is up! What’s popping?" My youngest brother, Hayden said to me. He was a 17 years old high school-er. "You haven't seen me in weeks and the first thing you say is what's popping?" I raised a brow at him and he scratched his neck─ something he did when he had something bothering him and he wanted to tell someone. "Okay spit it out. What is it this time?" I asked him. "... Or who is it?" Brent smirked on entering the room. "Shut up Brent. It’s none of your business." Hayden glared daggers at him and he raised his hands up in mock surrender and snickered. Ugh! The Callaghan Men! "Morning Drew." Javier greeted on stepping into the kitchen. He rubbed his eyes tiredly followed by a big yawn. "Morning Javier. Didn't get much sleep last night huh?" I asked him. "No. I had to draft a report on the medical record for one of my patients." He said pouring himself a mug of coffee, adding lots of milk and sugar to it. I guess that was where we were all alike. But apart from that, no other common feature. All different men and a boy. "Okay try getting some rest even if for a few hours before you work. You’re not a robot. Sleep is equally as important as work, you just need to find a balance─ and maintain it." I said to him and he nodded, taking the morning newspaper from me. "Where's Matron?" Hayden asked. "I sent her home. She had the runs this morning and she was really pale." "Oh... I'll call her later to check up on how she's doing." Hayden said. We all saw the Matron as our mother. She came to live with us after our father got arrested and she loved us like her own children. "And I still want to know who the 'who' is." I said to Hayden over breakfast and he sighed with a nod and Brent snickered. We all headed out to our different destinations. Javier to his gym/ physical therapy clinic. Brent to the bar and Hayden obviously to school. I offered to drop him off since his school was along the road leading to the Bikers lounge. "So tell me, who is she?" I asked with a brief glance in his direction before returning my eyes back to the road. He looked up at me. "Huh?" "Don't play dumb with me, Hayden. The girl Brent was talking about... Who is she? You can talk to me. I’m still your older brother,” I said to him and he sighed. "Okay. Okay. Her name is Darnell. She's Nigerian American. She just moved to the town closest to our school with her parents." "Well go on. Tell me about her." I urged him on. "Uhm... She's really pretty. She has chocolate skin. She's tall with a nice figure. She's really nice to everyone. She uses glasses and she looks really sexy in them. She..." "Hold on bro. Looks like someone has caught the feels. Damn!" I teased and his face lit up like red fireworks had been hidden in his cheeks. "Stop!" He groaned, covering his face in embarrassment. "Okay. I know that's not all. Tell me what the real problem is." "The thing is I don't know how to approach her. Her best friend tells me she likes me but she also said she doesn't like movie and ice cream dates as first dates. So I don't know what to do. I can't bowl and I'd hate to embarrass myself on our first date so that's a no no... She lived in a really quiet town before this so she can't skate and I can't teach her to skate on our first date and..." I could sense the panic in his voice. "Calm down Hayden. Calm down. In summary, all you want is for the first date to be special right?" I asked him and he nodded in affirmation. "Why not take her to the light house. Matron could prepare a food basket for you with lunch, dinner and snacks, you could take blankets. There is a table there already. You both could watch the sunset and do all cheesy things high school kids do." I suggested. His face lightened up with a really huge smile. I pulled up at the parking lot of his school. "Thanks bro. I didn't think of that, it sounds perfect. Good to have you back. You're the best." He hugged my side and got out of the car jogging to his friends. I laughed and shook my head before driving off towards the lounge. "Hey man. What has you smiling like that?" Wolfe asked me as soon as I stepped out of the car. "Nothing. Hayden's got girl problems. He caught the feels." I told him and his face expressed mock horror before we both burst into laughter. "Well, seems I'll have to tease him about that. Welcome back man. Good to see you." He pats my back. We both stepped into the lounge and walked straight to my office. "Okay so what’s the latest in shadow creek?" I asked him resting back in my chair with my leg propped on the table. "Uhm, two more bikers applied to join the gang. We haven't done the initiation process yet. We wanted you to get back first. We seized some properties from the overdue debtors. Lastly the lady that just relocated works at the bar─" But I cut him off. "What bar?" I asked. "How many bars are in this town? Your brother’s bar." He scoffed. Interesting. "Well let’s pay this damsel a visit, shall we." I picked up my keys and phone from the table leaving the office. "You coming or not?" I asked Wolfe. He just stood behind staring into space. "Yes I am." We both exited the lounge, getting into my car en route to the bar. ***************** I couldn't take my eyes off her no matter how hard I tried. It was like she held my gaze captive without even trying. She looked like a goddess−an earth goddess to be precise. She had beautiful long red her which flowed down her back and rested on her nicely placed round ass. She had round green captivating eyes that reminded me of nature. I guess I’d have to start paying attention to the green things around me. She had the fullest lips ever and I bet they were as soft as they looked. She had a very slim contoured nose that made me wonder if she got enough air through them. Not to forget the well placed mounds on her chest. Whoever her parents were had nice genes and did a very good job making this one. I watched from my usual table in the bar as she conversed with some rugged looking drinkers. She smiled wide enough to appear friendly and gave a little distance in case any perverted drunk tried to reach for her. I've frequented the bar more often than I used to which means I'm here every day just to get a look at the only piece of white creamy chocolate I can't have. I was out of town when Wolfe called to inform me about a new lady who moved to town over the weekend. I had business to attend to where I was so I made it top priority to welcome her to town as soon as I got back. On getting back to town I was updated that she started working at the local bar. Great! The local bar was one of my favorite spots in the town. I'm there four out of the seven days in a week. Not because it was owned by one of my Brothers, although that was one of the reasons. But because one could get really good cheap lay but I got it free. I'm a Callaghan *insert smug wink*. I got to the bar only to find the most gorgeous redhead I'd ever seen waiting a table. I straightened up and flashed on my signature smile but I was stopped by Wolfe who drew (the irony) me back by holding my arm. "Dude you might wanna slow it down and I'd advice not the Callaghan smile. She's not just any girl, she's the sheriff's only daughter." Well f**k my luck!
