Chapter 14The sun hung low in the sky. Aeneas hunkered down in a thicket of maple and pine with the rest of his people. He kept his eyes trained upon the Middle Sea, ready to spring the moment the Greek ships came into sight. The poets found inspiration in the waves, but Aeneas saw nothing to admire. The sea was new to him; he’d never seen it this close. The sharp tang of salt lay upon his tongue. He supposed he would have to get used to that. It was an infinite void. Seething foam pounded against the rocks. The wind moaned, causing an inward shudder. Beasts lurked in the deep. The world was full of monsters beyond human reckoning.
