Chapter Eight: Flames Remembered

825 Words
The night Heaven was taken, something ancient stirred within Gabriel. He lay in bed, wide awake. His eyes were open, but he didn’t see the ceiling above him. He saw fire. He heard screams. He smelled smoke. He shot upright, breath ragged, heart pounding like war drums. Images crashed through his mind—flashes of a woman crying, a baby wailing in her arms, two brothers clasping bloodied hands, and a village shouting for death. Across the estate, Goshen jolted awake too, drenched in sweat, eyes wide and haunted. “Gabriel,” he whispered into the silence. At the same time, Gabriel whispered, “Goshen.” They met in the hallway, drawn not by footsteps, but by something deeper—a soul-deep tether pulling them together. “You saw it too,” Gabriel said. It wasn’t a question. “The fire. The girl. The child.” Goshen nodded slowly. “Her name was Aurora.” Gabriel’s chest tightened. “And we were Zac and Cain.” The silence between them was loaded with recognition. Memories. Echoes from a life they hadn't known they'd lived. “She loved both of us,” Goshen murmured. “In that life.” “And she died because of it,” Gabriel finished. Something inside them shattered open. --- A Life Before This One – Flashback In a forgotten village nestled between ancient hills and shadowed woods, tradition ruled with an iron hand. Magic was feared, and love—true, wild, defiant love—was often seen as a curse when it defied the rules. Aurora was the healer’s daughter. Gentle. Radiant. Wise beyond her years. She fell in love with Zac—the elder of two noble brothers. Zac was steady, observant, and calm like deep water. Their love was sacred, whispered in forests, sealed under moonlight. But love doesn’t always stop at one heart. Cain, Zac’s younger brother, was fire—passionate, reckless, burning with desire. From the first time he saw Aurora, he was lost. He kept his distance, tried to bury it, fought the war within himself. But one night, under a sky riddled with thunder and rain, temptation overruled loyalty. Aurora gave in. She slept with Cain. And from that night, nothing was ever the same. She became pregnant—not with Zac’s child, but with Cain’s. When Zac found out, his world shattered. But instead of rage, he chose silence. He loved her. He loved his brother. And he knew that if the villagers found out, they would all be condemned. Still, secrets have a way of surfacing. The whispers began. Then the accusations. Then the torches. They were branded as sinners—an abomination. A woman loving two brothers. A child born of betrayal. The villagers burned them alive. Bound together. Screaming each other’s names. Their souls, scorched but not broken, made a vow as the flames devoured them: > “We will return. In another life. In another time. And when we do, we will love again. No matter the price. No matter the pain. We will find each other.” --- Present Day Heaven doesn’t yet know that she was once Aurora. But Gabriel and Goshen—Zac and Cain reborn—are remembering. Visions haunt them. Flashes of fire. Echoes of names. The overwhelming feeling that they’ve loved her long before they ever knew her. That night, as they stood in the Devereux library, dawn beginning to light the world outside, Irene entered silently. "You saw it," she said softly. They turned to her, stunned. "The past," she continued. "Your souls remember." Gabriel stepped forward. “How do you know?” Irene’s eyes filled with tears. “Because I was there.” They froze. “I was one of the villagers. I watched you burn. And in that moment... I regretted everything. I swore if I was ever given another life, I would protect the love you shared. I would right that wrong.” She walked to them, her voice trembling. “Heaven is Aurora reborn. And you... you are Zac and Cain. The prophecy wasn’t just about this life. It was the continuation of what was cut short before.” Goshen’s fists clenched. “So all of this… was meant to be.” “She’s missing,” Gabriel said. “And we can’t lose her again.” Irene nodded. “Then don’t. This time, fight for her. Don’t let fire take her from you again.” --- Elsewhere In the darkness of a warehouse, Heaven stirred. Though bruised, though chained, though hurting—something inside her awakened. A memory. A name. Two names. Zac. Cain. Her eyes opened. Her voice cracked. “Gabriel... Goshen…” Tears slipped down her cheeks. She didn’t know why. But she knew they were coming. They had loved each other in death. They would find each other again in life. And this time… The fire would not end them. It would begin their rebirth.
