“Why is Mia calling you?” I tried again. “I don’t know,” he said, not meeting my eyes. He was lying to me. I know he was. Instead of answering the phone, he swiped left to ignore. And then he started to put on his clothes. “Ian?” Silence. He ran his fingers through his hair and sighed. “Look, I don’t know why she’s calling me.” I didn’t believe that for a second, and he knew that I didn’t believe him. “Right,” I said. “You don’t know why she’s calling. Okay.” His phone rang, again. And then again, he ignored the call. “Answer it,” I said—more like demanding. He said, “I should go, Zoe.” “Ian, answer the phone.” Ian didn’t answer the phone so it kept ringing and ringing and ringing.
