Chapter 18 - Sure, Alpha

1063 Words
The shift in the room reached her before the door fully closed. It moved through the space, subtle at first, then heavier, pressing into the air until it demanded attention. Elara felt it along her skin, a quiet pull that drew her focus whether she wanted it or not. Thorne stood near the table, maps spread beneath his hands. His head lifted the moment she stepped inside, his attention settling on her without hesitation. Elara crossed toward the window, putting distance between them. Her fingers brushed the frame as she steadied herself, her gaze fixed on the dark outside. “Where were you?” His voice carried low. “I walked the territory.” She did not turn. “Long enough to make it obvious you weren’t where you should be.” That pulled her attention back. Elara turned slowly, her eyes lifting, the roll of them deliberate. “Stop doing that.” “Doing what?” “That.” His gaze held hers. “It’s irritating.” “To you?” A rough sound left him, quiet but unmistakable. “And my wolf.” She let the second eye roll linger, aware of the way his attention followed it, heavier now, more focused. The day had dragged longer than she cared to admit. “I’m done for the night.” She moved past him. His hand closed around her wrist before she cleared him. The grip stopped her immediately, firm enough to leave no question. Heat rushed up her arm, sharp and sudden. Elara stilled, then turned her head slowly. He held her there for a second before releasing her, though he didn’t step back. The space between them felt smaller now, tighter, charged in a way it hadn’t been before. “You don’t walk away from me like that.” His voice dropped, rougher than before, something slipping through the control he usually kept in place. Elara pulled her hand free, lifting her gaze to meet his without hesitation. “Watch me.” Something shifted in his expression, the corner of his mouth pulling in a way that held no humor. A low growl followed, deeper this time, carrying through the space between them. He stepped closer. The distance disappeared until she felt it in her chest, in the way her breath caught before she forced it steady again. “You went into my office,” he said, quieter now, though it carried more weight. “You went through things that were never meant for you.” His gaze moved over her face, searching, measuring, finding nothing that eased whatever had started building in him. “You’ve been pushing since the moment you got here,” he continued, the restraint in his tone wearing thinner with every word. “Ignoring boundaries. Testing limits as though they don’t apply to you.” Elara held her ground. Her pulse picked up, but she didn’t let it show. “That stops.” The words came lower now, closer to a warning. She tilted her head slightly, her gaze steady on his. “Or what?” That was enough. The shift in him came all at once. The air changed, pressing in harder as he stepped closer again, forcing her back half a step before she caught herself. The movement barely registered before she held her position. A growl broke through, deeper, rough against the quiet. His hand lifted, stopping just short of her shoulder. The tension in his fingers showed clearly as he held himself back. “Careful,” he said, his voice rougher now, the edge of it closer to the surface. “You’re running out of patience I don’t have to give.” Elara drew in a deeper breath, slower this time, her body reacting despite the calm she held on the surface. “Sure, Alpha.” The word came quieter, though it carried. He didn’t move. Didn’t speak. For a moment, everything held in place, stretched tight between them. Something darker flickered through his gaze before he forced it back under control. Then he stepped away. The distance returned all at once, the shift in the air immediate. Elara felt it. He dragged a hand through his hair, turning slightly before looking back at her, tension still visible in the set of his jaw. She moved past him again. This time he let her go. His attention followed her as she crossed the room and headed toward the bathroom, closing the door behind her without another word. Steam filled the space as the water ran hot, the heat working through the tension that clung to her muscles. It eased some of it, though the rest remained, tight beneath her skin. When she stepped back into the room, damp hair falling against her shoulders, the awareness returned immediately. He hadn’t left. His attention was already on her. “We’re not finished.” Elara crossed the room without slowing. “We are for tonight.” His gaze followed her, something tightening in his expression, the only sign of how little he liked that answer. She reached the bed, pulling the covers back with a steady motion before slipping beneath them. The pillow went between them without hesitation, a quiet line drawn in place. The silence that followed carried weight. It pressed into the room, settling into every corner. Thorne remained where he stood, his gaze fixed on her, something darker moving beneath the control he still held onto. Elara kept her back to him. She felt it anyway. The shift in him. The tension building again, pulling tighter. A growl slipped from his chest, rougher now, closer to the surface. He moved suddenly. The distance opened between them in a single step as he turned away. His hand dragged across the back of his neck, the tension in the motion clear as he crossed the room. “You’re pushing your luck.” The words came low, stripped down to nothing but warning. He didn’t wait for a response. The door opened. Then shut with force. The sound echoed through the room before silence followed. Real silence. It lingered, though the weight of him remained in the space he had left behind. Elara stared at the empty room for a moment longer before turning onto her side. Sleep came slowly. Her thoughts refused to quiet, the tension from earlier still resting beneath her skin.
