I’m still standing in the kitchen, stunned by Ashley’s calm acceptance of my news. She just took the check and walked out without a fight. It hits me harder than I expected. It hurts that she didn’t argue or plead for me to change my mind. She just left, like she was ready to move on without a second glance…. i guess I should have expected that, but I did not.
I tell myself it’s probably for the best. I mean, I’m finally getting the chance to reconnect with Helene, the perfect woman I thought I’d lost for good… the woman I tried to replace. But still, the emptiness in my chest doesn’t fade.
Later in the evening, as I prepare for my date with Helene, I try to shake off the lingering thoughts of Ashley. I put on a crisp shirt and adjust my tie, hoping this will be the fresh start
