ALPHA JACKSON POV
As usual, Jesse tries to keep the peace. “Mom, we know you’re in love. But we have an entire pack to think about. Safety has to be our top priority. Why don’t we run background checks on Ivan and his daughter before they come here? Ok? We need to make sure that we don’t have dangerous criminals moving into our pack. We’ll feel better, you’ll get your wedding, everyone is happy, then. Yes?” He looks around at all of us, silently asking for confirmation. My wolf growls a little bit at this, still not liking strangers coming into our pack.
Mom sighs heavily. “Fine. That works for me. I know they have nothing to hide so I’m fine with it. Does that work for you, boys?”
Jeremy and I share a look. There is no way out of this now. Mom has our approval and she is going to run with it. “Alright mom, that will work. Jesse, can you ask Connor to go and get the background checks started for Ivan and Callista White please?”
“On it!” His eyes glaze over as he mind links with Connor.
“Ok, mom. Go finish up planning for your fiancé to come. Get a couple of omegas to help you with the rooms. And ask Maria and Nana to help you plan the wedding.” I think it’s in. . .what. . . about three weeks now?
She jumps up and crushes each of us with a bear hug that she, honestly, doesn’t look like she has the strength for. “Thank you for being so flexible! My sweet boys! I love you so much! Everything will be fine! You’ll see!”
She practically skips out of the room in glee.
I already feel a headache coming on.
. . . . . . . . . .
Ten days later. . .
We have our entire pack house busy as a beehive today. The omegas are finishing decorating the rooms and stocking toiletries. Ivan and the not- werewolf- werewolf- girl will arrive in four days. I’m going to need to give each of them a nice bonus for all the work they have put in.
Ivan will move in with my mother in her suite in the East wing. Mom has her own wing on the fourth floor for privacy. She is our mother, after all. No one wants their mother invading their privacy, or to invade their mother’s privacy. A disgusted shiver goes down my spine at the thought. Yuck.
Callista will have a suite of her own on James’ floor in the West wing. All of us brothers are in the West wing, just James is on the fourth floor. Jeremy, Jesse, and I are on the fifth floor, as the Alphas. We all like to be close to each other, though. We try, for the most part, to respect each other’s personal space. I want this girl close, though. You know that saying to keep your friends close but your enemies closer? Well I’m not sure I would consider her an enemy, per se, but she spells trouble with a capital T. I mean, come on, a teenage girl about to shift, who knows nothing about werewolves. And don’t even get me started on our hierarchy. She won’t even know that we are the alphas! How is she supposed to know her place here when she has no idea that she even HAS a place!? That place is at the bottom, in case you were wondering.
This entire situation has been nothing short of a nightmare, to be honest. I have the guards setting up extra security measures around the pack. We’re going to beef up security at the gates, borders, and main road. I am also adding two guards to my mother’s floor, just in case. She is my mother, after all, and I don’t trust this guy. But I would do anything for my mom.
She is the best woman on the entire planet. Not to mention, she has been alone ever since dad died, she just never moved on. I remember, she cried for months, then one day she came home with her hair dyed blonde and hasn’t cried since. I don’t think she ever got over my father, just learned to compartmentalize her grief so she could raise us. So, if Mom is happy, then I’m happy. I just wish her happiness came with less prep work.
A knock at my office door pulls me out of my thoughts. “Come in.”
Connor. Perfect. I hope he has news for me.
“Hey cuz, I got those background checks back on our new additions.”
Connor is a good beta. He always goes above and beyond to help the pack. Plus, he is family, Uncle Conrad’s son, and we grew up together while his dad was stand- in Alpha. It made perfect sense to make him our beta. Not only is he qualified, but it was the least we could do after Uncle Conrad stepped up for the pack for so many years. He really did a great job integrating the packs and ensuring peace between everyone.
“Great. So, are we inviting serial ki.llers into our midst?”
“No. Nothing like that. They’re both clean as a whistle. The girl is an honor student, involved in sports, has a couple full- ride scholarships coming her way, and she was working as a part time barista after school.”
“Ok. Sounds good, and the father?”
“Well, his background check is squeaky clean. He was married to the girl’s mother, Linda, until she was ki.lled in a hit- and- run accident. He runs a successful business and pays his taxes. . . “
“Why do I sense a “but” coming?”
“BUT. . . He is almost TOO clean, you know? Not even a parking ticket or an over draft at the bank. Nothing.”
“That is strange but maybe he is just an upstanding citizen? Please, say yes.”
“That isn’t even the strange part. There is absolutely no record of him before about eighteen years ago. Not a birth certificate, not a driver’s license, not a credit card. I can’t find any trace of him before then, it’s like he just popped up one day.”
“I’m not liking where this is going. Could there be any cause of this other than what I’m thinking?”
“Im not really sure. Maybe that was when he left his pack and moved to the human world? But sounds to me like his identity has been fabricated. Why would someone go to the lengths to create a new identity if there wasn’t a reason?”
I exhale a long sigh. Great. This is not what I wanted to hear. This is exactly what I was afraid of. “Ok. Then can you and the tech guys take a closer look at this and do some digging? Figure out what he’s hiding and where he came from. We can’t leave anything up to chance. Not where my mother is concerned, and not where the pack is concerned.”
“You got it. I’ll let you know when we find something, but it might take a while. Whatever he’s hiding, he’s covered it up very well.” I mind link Jesse and Jeremy to fill them in on what Connor found.
Awesome. Just when I thought that having strangers move in couldn’t get any more stressful. . .
