CALLISTA POV
Two weeks later. . . .
It is moving day. I’ve packed up everything in my room and kept aside a duffel bag of necessities that I will need right away.
I let my coaches and my boss know that I’m leaving. All that is left is to say goodbye to my boyfriend, Daniel, and Sarah. Let me say, this is the worst part of the entire move, including the part where I had to pack up a lifetime’s worth of trinkets.
I don’t know what I’ll do without Sarah. I’m going to miss her like crazy! I begged my father to reconsider and have Lydia move in with us.
Flashback two weeks ago. . .
“Dad! It’s my senior year! Sarah and I were going to graduate together! And what about Daniel?! And. . . And my sports, you know how good those will look on college applications! I cannot just leave everything behind like this! And what about your business? Are you just going to leave it unattended?”
“I’m not unsympathetic, honey, but you’ll make more friends and you can visit your old ones, too. You’re too young to be letting a boy affect your decisions. They have AP classes in your new school and you can join some teams there, also. You’re young, you’ll adapt. As for my business, I have great management staff who have been with me for many years, like Uncle Rick and Uncle John. The rest I can do myself, remotely. Now, I know you’re not thrilled with this, but my decision is final.”
End flashback. . .
So you see there was no way out of this. My dad didn’t build a successful business by being a pushover. I guess, that’s that.
As for Daniel and I, well, we’re not delusional enough to think that this would be forever. He’s not my Mr. Right, he is my Mr. Right Now and as of today he is going to be my Mr. Left Behind. We’re only seniors in high school. I’ll only be an hour and a half away but there’s no way long distance will work. He’s a great guy and we are good friends so we decided to end things now before things get messy. Our story will end on a good note. Well, our romantic relationship will, we’re going to keep in touch and he may even come to see me with Sarah sometimes. Maybe we can even hook up if we ever see each other again. I hate to admit this, but that will probably be what I miss most about Daniel. He’s a VERY generous lover. VERY generous indeed. So that’s something to look forward to.
“Promise me you guys will come visit me on the weekends and at holiday break. . .” I look at Sarah and Daniel hopefully. These are my two favorite people around here.
“Duh bit.ch!” Sarah screeches before lunging at me and crushing me in a bear hug. She’s so sweet. . . insert eye roll here. “And you better promise to text and video chat with me everyday. EVERY. DA.MN. DAY! And another thing! Don’t you DARE even think of getting a new best friend over there! That spot is MINE!”
This best friend of mine is so dramatic. And very good at rambling!
“Of course! We’ll keep in constant contact! As soon as I get unpacked and settled, you’re spending a weekend here whether you like it or not! And a new best friend? Obviously not! I’ll plaster my Resting b***h Face on so hard that I won’t make any friends at all, let alone a best friend.”
Sarah starts cackling at this because she knows it’s true. I’m not unfriendly, unlikeable, or anti- social but I don’t let anyone get close to me. I get along with alot of people in most social circles but every one of them is more an acquaintance than a friend. They’re friendly, on only the shallowest level. They don’t know me, not really. Only Sarah. And maybe Daniel, a little bit.
As Sarah’s laughter finally dies down, she sighs happily. “Good deal!”
“Ok, now shoo! Give Daniel and I a few minutes alone to say goodbye. Don’t you DARE leave yet! I’ll expect you to be waiting by my dad’s car for me.” I point a stern finger in her direction with a smile and a nose scrunch.
She skips off and leaves Daniel and I alone in my back yard.
“This sucks! I wish you didn’t have to go.” He looks at me so sadly that it makes my breath catch in my throat. This sweet, sweet guy I have. Had. I guess, it’s had now. Who’s crying? I’m not crying, not at all. “I really am going to miss you, you know?”
“I’ll miss you, too. I wish things didn’t have to be like this. At least Lydia is nice, it might be fun living with her. And, my dad told me that she has kids also, so it might be nice to get to know my new future step siblings.” I offer him a half- hearted smile because as good as all that does sound, I really would rather not leave.
“Your dad is a good guy. He deserves to be happy. I would just prefer if he could be happy here.”
“Aww, Sweets!” I reach up on my tippy toes and plant a gentle kiss on his lips which he immediately tries to deepen.
He pulls back and his lips curve into that little smirk that I know means he is about to cause trouble.
“What do you say we sneak away into your tree house and fool around one last time?” He waggles his eyebrows and grabs a handful of my as.s. Just as he’s leaning down to capture my lips again. . .
“Callie!” My dad. “Bus is pulling out, kiddo!”
Daniel sighs and pouts dramatically. “I guess that’s a no then. . . “
I playfully sm.ack his chest and erupt into a fit of giggles. He can be so silly sometimes. It’s the comic relief we needed when the mood is so melancholy. “Oh stop it! We are going to see each other again soon. You will have to come visit me with Sarah. Maybe we can even fool around while you’re there to make up for this.” I wave a hand and gesture around us to emphasize the situation I’m referring to.
“DEAL!” Ha! He jumped on that a little bit too quickly. . . Guys are so horny but at least this one is sweet, so I’ll let it slide.
“Come on! Walk me to the car so I can say goodbye to you and Sarah one more time.” We walk from the backyard to the front hand in hand.
Well, this is it.
