CHAPTER 1: Callista White

CALLISTA POV Eighteen years later. . . “Walter! Tina! Your orders are up!” The hefty, balding man in a fancy suit comes over to pick up his medium black coffee. Little Miss I- have- crazy- expensive- shoes- and- I- think- I- am- better- than- you follows behind click clacking on the floor to grab her extra large iced mocha latte with a shot of espresso and extra whipped cream. “Thank you! Have a wonderful evening! Come again!” I groan internally. These people are so predictable. Boring man, boring coffee. Snooty lady, over the top coffee order. Did I mention that all of them are very rich? Well, they are. This is the norm at the coffee place I work at as a part time barista after school. It’s positioned on this street between all the lawyer offices and other rich people businesses. Perfect place for a coffee shop to be successful. I’m not sure what all these businesses actually do, just that the workers have too much money for their own good and rude attitudes towards service workers. Like, come on, you really have to yell at a teenage girl because your latte has too much foam? Get a grip. But, I digress. I deal with it because my father wants me to be close by him at almost all times to make sure that I’m safe. My father’s business is on this block, also. You know, one of those rich and snobby places? So it was either work as a barista or work for my dad, Ivan White, at his company that does mergers and acquisitions. I would be taking notes on meetings and filing paperwork. Between track, cheerleading, and my AP classes, I don’t mentally have it in me to have my soul sucked out of me in such a brutal manner. I just want a little bit of financial freedom. Yeah, my father has plenty of money for me to live comfortably without having to work but he’s a bit overbearing. It has been just the two of us ever since my mom passed away several years ago. She was run over by a hit- and- run driver while crossing the street. Now, my father acts as if I could be killed any second if I’m too far away. I mean, I guess that is technically true, but no more probable for me than anyone else walking down the street. He is over the top. I am seventeen, coming up on my eighteenth birthday in a few months. I’m saving up to go away for college. I’m hoping to get a scholarship but I will still have other expenses. I love my dad, don’t get me wrong. I just do not want to live my life in a gilded cage. I want to live a normal, peaceful existence minus all of my father’s paranoia. I know that he will not agree to me being away for school, so I decided to take him out of the equation. I can do this by myself. Once I turn eighteen in the spring, he won’t be able to stop me. “Hey Cal!” My best friend, Sarah, snaps me out of my reverie. She is the sister I never had, even though we are polar opposites. Sarah is tall, like 5’9”. I’m short, only about 5’5” if I stand really straight. She has long, straight, blonde hair, while mine is also long but dark and wavy. Sarah has almond shaped brown eyes, I have big, crystal blue eyes. She’s very thin and looks like a model, seriously she is THAT gorgeous. Me, on the other hand? I have curves. Too many curves. I mean, I’m not fat, I do sports, but I’m busty and have a booty with thick thighs that over power my shorter frame. I’m more reserved unless I’m completely comfortable with you. I tend to keep to myself, my only company being Sarah and my boyfriend, Daniel. Sarah is an absolute social butterfly. She is friends with almost everyone at school. I’m her favorite though. “What’s up, Sar?” “It’s almost 5 o’clock. Weren’t you supposed to leave early today to meet Daddy-o for dinner?” I glance at the clock and see that she is absolutely correct. I have lost track of time, as usual. “AH! Sh.it!” I am supposed to be meeting my dad’s girlfriend, Lydia today! “I gotta go! Love you! Bye!” “Bye babes, have fun! Be a good girl for step- mommy dearest. Try not to piss her off on the first day!” She sing songs with a huge grin plastered to her face. I flip her an obscene gesture as I run out the door before I’m late. . . . . . . . . . . . “You’re late.” I check my watch and roll my eyes. 5:33. “Dad, it’s only three minutes. Relax over there, Captain Punctuality.” I laugh, my dad doesn’t, but his face does relax a little bit so I’ll call that a joke successfully landed. I look around at our table. “So where is she?” “She just went to the ladies’ room.” He looks behind me and says “Ah, here she comes, now.” I turn around to see a stunning woman with beautiful blonde highlighted hair walking over to our table wearing a yellow sundress. She looks the picture of elegance and she smiles a very sweet, dimpled smile when she makes eye contact with me. “Callie, this is Lydia Harrison. Lydia, this is my daughter, Callista.” She pulls me in for an unexpected hug and says “ It’s so nice to finally meet you, dear. I have heard nothing but wonderful things, though your father did not tell me that you were so gorgeous! My goodness! I really hope that we can be friends.” She pulls away a bit as she holds me by the shoulders and smiles again. Wow! She is so nice! And so beautiful. Way to go, Dad! “I’m so glad to meet you, too, Lydia! My dad has told me so much about you, also.” She smiles again and pats my arm before she releases me. A girl could get used to this. . . . . . . . . . . . A little while later, we’re sitting at our table eating our meals. Lydia and I got the chicken Marsala, while my dad got the t- bone steak and baked potato. Suddenly, my dad clears this throat, catching my attention. “Callie, there is something that Lydia and I would like to discuss with you.” “ Oh! Ok? Shoot!” I put my fork down and give my father my full attention. “Well, as you know, Lydia and I have been seeing each other for a little while, now.” I furrow my brows not really getting where he is going with this. “Things have been getting serious between us and well, I proposed. We’re getting married.” Her hand flies forward and flashes the huge rock on her ring finger. How did I not notice that thing?! It’s gigantic! Ok, so not the point right now. He proposed? They’re getting married? As in, I’ll have a step mother? So soon? This just seems a little. . . abrupt. “Wow, Dad. . . that’s. . . wow! I mean, um, congratulations you guys!” I. AM. SHOCKED! I have no idea what to say. Oh crap, I hope my face isn’t showing how stupefied I am right now. Who am I kidding? I know it is. My face has absolutely no filter, much like my mouth. “Honey, I know it might seem sudden, but we’re in love. Lydia’s family owns some businesses and an estate outside the city. You and I are going to be moving in with Lydia and her family.” My mouth popped open like I was catching flies. What? I cannot believe this! We’re moving?!
