CHAPTER 4: ALPHA JACKSON

1408 Words
ALPHA JACKSON POV Two weeks ago. . . “Mom, you absolutely cannot get married to some random human you met working in the city. And you cannot bring him and his daughter to live in our pack.” I can’t believe what I am hearing right now. Why would she think that we would agree to this? Jesse, Jeremy, and I had to pull our mother into my office to speak privately after she informed us, and our younger brother, James, that she was engaged. Apparently she is marrying some guy she met in the city who she had hired to help our logging business absorb another smaller business. We had to leave James out of this discussion, he was way too excited about this. Probably some freaky step sister fantasy. Yeah, he has a daughter, James’ age, in fact. But this can’t happen. No way in he.ll. “Jax, I’m not as dumb as you think I am. . .” My mom rolls her eyes dramatically. “Mom. . . “ “No, honey, just listen. He’s not a human. . . “ My brothers and I share a confused look. “I’m not following. I thought you said that you met him in the city? If he’s a wolf, then what is he doing living in a human city instead of a pack?” “I did meet him in the city. He was married to a human, his daughter’s mother. After his wife passed away, he stayed in the city with her because he didn’t want any more of her life to be uprooted. Besides he is also not even sure if she’ll have a wolf since she is half human. So she knows nothing about werewolves.” My mouth hangs open for a moment before I let out a heavy sigh and pinch the bridge of my nose. “She doesn’t know. . . ?” “No. Ivan wanted Callista to blend in with the other kids in the city and he didn’t want her to feel left out or be bullied in a pack. You know how the kids can be about rankings. They would chew up and spit out a half human girl.” What kind of ass- backward logic is that? What the f***k is wrong with this guy? My wolf, Azazel, raises his hackles in my mind, he is getting bad vibes from this whole situation, too. I’ll have to have Connor look more into this later. “So you’re saying. . . that he is just going to let this girl freak the he.ll out if she starts turning into an animal on her eighteenth birthday. . . ? Does she not hear her wolf?” My mother finally looks like she’s seeing where I’m coming from on this. “Well, he said that he would spend her birthday with her and start explaining if she shows signs of turning and then talk her through the change. Being half human, she might not be able to speak to her wolf until she shows up, we don’t really know for sure.” “Uh. . . Uh huh. . .” Speechless. I am actually speechless. Me! Alpha Jackson Harrison, speechless! I can NOT believe it. What the f***k? My brothers are sitting on my couch with their jaws on the floor. They look about as good as I feel right now. I have never heard of such a thing! We are taught about our wolves from the time we can talk. We’re taught what to expect, how to bond with our wolves, and how to get through the first shift. The first shift is hard on all wolves, I cannot imagine just throwing a teenage girl into that situation with no clue. Not even to mention the fact that we physically train every wolf, from puberty (when they start manifesting their wolf and being able to speak with them) onwards, to prepare them for said shift on their eighteenth birthday. I mean, what is this guy actually thinking? I bet he hates her. Great, she probably sucks and we’ll hate her, too. “So Mom, since you have all the answers here, how is it going to work having this girl who knows nothing about werewolves coming to live in a WEREWOLF PACK?!” “Oh! Well, we discussed this actually. We figured that no one would tell her. . .” I slam my face into my palms and let out a long exhale. “If she IS a wolf, then she will have the whole pack here to help her. If she’s not, then she’ll only be here less than a year before she goes off to college.” Oh yeah, because that solves the entire issue. . . “And what happens when she SEES a wolf or witnesses someone SHIFTING?” “If that happens, then we’ll have no choice but to explain, but maybe we could all just try to be careful?” She shrugs like it’s the easiest thing in the world. Jeremy chimes into this asinine conversation. “Mom, we don’t know anything about these people. What pack did he come from? This whole thing just sounds crazy. I don’t think we should let either of them set foot on pack lands.” THANK YOU! “Jess, I know all that I need to know about Ivan. I know he’s sweet, he treats me well, he’s a hard worker, and he’s completely devoted to his daughter. He’s a good man, sweetheart. I love him.” Oh, my poor, sweet, naive mother. How could she trust anyone so easily after what happened to Dad? Especially this guy whose story is just so. . . unbelievable? My father was betrayed by an alpha he was trying to help out of a jam. My parents were close with Alpha Brian and Luna Melanie. We had been to the White Moon Pack more times than I can remember. They were like family to us. My father went to go finalize some paperwork for the trade deal and never even made it there. He and his beta, Uncle Leo, were apparently ambushed just outside White Moon’s borders. They were found in their mang.led car, each of them with a single g.un sh.ot wound to the head. Uncle Conrad, my dad’s brother, had to take over the pack for my father until my brothers and I came of age. He investigated the a.ssa.ssination and found that the vehicle that hit them had left an indentation of their plate in the car’s fender during the crash. The plate came back to White Moon’s Gamma, Wesley Sykes. My uncle went to White Moon to ask questions about whether the attack was sanctioned or if the gamma was acting of his own accord. When he got there, he discovered that Alpha Brian, Luna Melanie, the beta, and the gamma had all fled. Alpha Brian took all of the pack’s remaining assets and disappeared. That sounds pretty guilty to me. Uncle Conrad searched for him for years but hit one dead end after another. Nothing. It has been eighteen years now. Still no answers and still no justice. When we find Alpha Brian, and we will, my brothers and I WILL have our revenge. His family will feel the weight of what he’s done for generations to come. If they have even a drop of his blood in their veins, they will suffer for it. Not only did he leave our pack without an alpha, but he left my mother to grieve the loss of her mate while pregnant and raising triplets. Not to mention the total ruin he left his pack in. Coward. Kills someone and then runs and hides before he has to deal with the fallout. All those people at the White Moon Pack, they would have died if Uncle Conrad hadn’t stepped in and absorbed the pack. He moved everyone onto our lands. All the pack members worked together to build homes for our new members. We use the White Moon pack lands as farm land now and we have a few of our offices there as well. That rat bas.tard ruined countless lives that day and then he was just gone. I hope he doesn’t get too comfortable wherever he is, because his peace won’t last forever. We’ll make certain of it. . .
