6: Shattered Illusions

1114 Words
Selene paced her chamber like a caged wolf, her heart hammering against her ribs. The irony wasn’t lost on her, after five years of freedom, she was trapped in Ravenstone once more. Only this time, she’d walked into the cage willingly. Lucian slept peacefully on the bed, his small chest rising and falling in the steady rhythm of childhood innocence. He had no idea that his very existence had painted a target on all their backs. The sharp knock she’d been dreading finally came. Selene knew without looking that it was Kade. Her body recognized his presence like a compass finding true north, an instinct she’d spent years trying to kill. “Come in,” she said, her voice carefully controlled. Kade stepped through the doorway, and immediately the room felt smaller. His silver eyes were shadowed with exhaustion, his usually perfect control showing hairline cracks. “We need to talk,” he said without preamble. “About the Council’s decision?” She didn’t bother making it a question. “They want the ceremony tomorrow night. Full bonding ritual.” He ran a hand through his dark hair, the gesture achingly familiar. “In front of every pack leader in the region.” Selene’s knees nearly buckled. “The bonding ritual? Kade, that’s,” “Permanent. I know.” His voice was rough. “Believe me, I know what I’m asking.” She sank into the chair by the window, suddenly dizzy. The bonding ritual wasn’t just political theater, it was supernatural binding that would tie their souls together until death. There would be no divorce, no separation, no escape. “And if I refuse?” “They’ll declare Lucian illegitimate. Strip him of any protection under pack law.” Kade’s expression was grim. “Darius has already sent formal notice. He’s claiming Oracle children require ‘specialized guidance’ from experienced handlers.” The words hit like physical blows. “He wants to cage our son.” “He wants to use him as a weapon.” Kade moved closer, his presence both comforting and overwhelming. “Selene, I know what this costs you. I know what I destroyed between us. But,” “Do you?” The question exploded out of her. “Do you really understand what you’re asking?” Kade was quiet for a long moment. When he spoke, his voice was barely above a whisper. “I’m asking you to sacrifice your freedom to save our son. I’m asking you to bind yourself to the man who broke your heart. I’m asking you to give up any chance at real happiness.” The raw honesty stole her breath. She’d expected manipulation, political maneuvering. Not this brutal acknowledgment of what he was demanding. “Why should I trust you?” she whispered. “Because I love you.” The words fell between them like stones. “Because I never stopped loving you, even when I was too much of a coward to choose you. Because if there was any other way to protect you both, I’d take it in a heartbeat.” Selene stared at him, seeing past the Alpha mask to the man beneath. The man who’d held her through nightmares and made her laugh until her sides ached. The man who’d chosen duty over love and destroyed them both in the process. “I can’t do this, Kade,” she breathed. Before he could respond, the door burst open. Beta Marcus stumbled in, his face white with terror. “Alpha,” he gasped. “Emergency. Multiple emergencies.” Kade was instantly alert. “Report.” “Darius isn’t waiting for formal challenges. He’s here. Now. With a full war party.” Marcus swallowed hard. “And they’ve brought hunters.” Selene felt ice flood her veins. Hunters, humans who specialized in capturing supernatural beings for experimentation and exploitation. “How many?” Kade demanded. “Two dozen wolves. Six hunters with specialized containment equipment.” Marcus glanced at Selene. “Sir, they’re not just here for the boy. They know about Selene’s bloodline.” “What bloodline?” Selene asked, confused. Marcus looked sick. “Your grandmother wasn’t just pack. She was direct descendant of the original Oracle line. If you carry dormant abilities…” The implications hit her like a tidal wave. They didn’t just want Lucian. They wanted her too. A breeding pair to create an army of Oracle children under their control. “We have to run,” she whispered, moving toward Lucian’s sleeping form. “There’s nowhere to run,” Kade said grimly. “They’ve surrounded the territory. We’re trapped.” “Then we fight.” “Against hunters with containment equipment? They’ll cage us before we can shift.” Kade’s jaw tightened. “There’s only one option left.” Selene looked at him, seeing the desperate plan forming in his eyes. “No.” “It’s the only way. If we’re bonded, truly bonded, pack law gives us protection even from hunters. They can’t separate a mated pair without violating international supernatural accords.” “The bonding ritual takes hours,” she protested. “We don’t have hours.” “We don’t need the full ceremony. Just the binding itself.” Kade’s eyes burned with fierce intensity. “One cut, blood mixed with blood, witnessed by pack members. It would be enough.” Selene felt the walls closing in. “And if I refuse?” “Then in an hour, maybe less, hunters will drag you and Lucian away in chains.” The choice was no choice at all. Through the window, she could see lights moving through the forest, flashlights and torches, closing in like a noose. Somewhere out there, Darius was giving his final orders. Hunters were checking their equipment one last time. Her son murmured in his sleep, one small hand reaching out as if seeking comfort. Selene closed her eyes and felt her carefully constructed world crumble to dust. “If we do this,” she said quietly, “if I agree to this binding, you swear to me that Lucian’s safety comes first. Always.” “Always,” Kade promised without hesitation. “And if you ever betray that trust, if you ever put pack politics above our son’s welfare…” She met his eyes, letting him see the steel beneath her desperation. “I’ll kill you myself.” Kade nodded solemnly. “I wouldn’t expect anything less.” As Marcus rushed off to gather witnesses, Selene realized she was about to make the same choice that had defined her grandmother’s life, sacrifice everything for the next generation. She just hoped it would be enough to save them all.
