Chapter 2

1104 Words
Nova's POV. It can't be, maybe it's all in my head. I tried to push aside the thoughts in my head and ignore the voice of my wolf. But it just wouldn't stop yearning for closeness to Logan Wyatt. “Mate!” It continued. I stiffened, my fingers dug into the tablecloth. No, that couldn’t be right. His eyes met mine and for one perfect, terrifying second, something flickered in them. Recognition. Pull. Heat. Then, just as quickly as it came, it vanished. “Son,” Alpha Killian said, standing. “Glad you made it. Come meet your stepsister” I blinked. Son? Stepsister? Wait! No. Was Logan Wyatt Alpha Killian's son? Killian Wyatt and Logan Wyatt, they had the same surname. Why didn't I think of it until now? My crush, the hockey player, the supernatural league star. The face plastered all over my old bedroom wall was now my stepbrother? I looked at Mum and she was beaming at me, “Was this the surprise she was talking about?” He stepped forward, expression unreadable, and sat down across Alpha Killian at the end of the table, ignoring everyone. “It’s nice to finally meet you, Logan. Your dad has told me a lot about you,” Mum said warmly, giving her best smile. “He sure has,” Logan responded rudely. Mum's smile faded, and she looked at Alpha Killian before focusing on her plate. I wanted to respond to him for talking to Mum like that, but I couldn't find the right word. I was still shocked and confused. I got to see my crush after all these years and he turns out to be my stepbrother and my mate! “You shouldn't talk to her like that, she was only trying to have a conversation with you!” Alpha Killian warned, his demeanour calm but his voice held back rising anger. “I didn't ask for her conversation, can I just eat this food in peace?” He answered his father harshly. Alpha Killian slammed his fist on the table, breathing noisily. Mum touched his hand gently, looking at him, her eyes pleading for him to let it go. We all ate in silence, I kept stealing glances at him as he ate. For a moment, his eyes met mine, and time stopped. I thought he felt it too, the spark, the bond, the pull. But then his expression twisted, not in recognition but disgust. He stood up to leave the dining room, and I didn't know where I got the boldness to call out to him. He paused in his steps and I walked over to where he was. “Hi, I'm Nova Brooke, your stepsister,” he looked down at my outstretched hand. “You’ve got to be kidding me,” he muttered under his breath, brushing past me like I was a rotting corpse. I stood there, frozen. My wolf whimpered, confused. She didn’t care about anything, she only knew the bond. But I felt sick. I was mated to my rude stepbrother. I excused myself before dessert, going back to my room. My breathing came in sharp waves, as I stared at my face in the mirror on the bathroom wall. I splashed water on my face, but nothing helped. The mate bond had settled in like fire in my chest. And it wasn’t done. Later that evening, I was taking a stroll around the house and saw him near the patio. He was on his phone, laughing with someone, but the moment he saw me, his face hardened. “We need to talk,” I said, trying to keep my voice steady. “No, we don’t,” he snapped, turning to walk away. “It’s real, isn’t it?” I chased after him. “You felt it too. The bond.” He stopped so fast that I almost collided with him. He turned, grabbed my arm, and yanked me behind the nearest pillar, out of earshot. “Don’t,” he hissed. “Don’t ever say that again.” “But…” “I don’t know what the hell the moon goddess was thinking, but this?” He gestured between us. “This is a mistake. A joke that will never happen.” “No, she doesn’t make mistakes,” I said fiercely. “You just don’t want to accept it.” He laughed bitterly. “You’re just a kid with a crush on me and you are just being delusional.” “This is our fate,” I whispered. “No,” he said coldly. “It’s a curse. And if you have any sense of survival, you’ll keep your mouth shut about it.” “You don’t think you know what this bond really means.” “I know enough to feel it ripping me apart every second you deny it.” He clenched his jaw. “Then get used to the pain. Because I reject it. I reject you.” “You’re rejecting me?” I asked, voice shaking. His eyes flickered, something unreadable flashing through them. “I already have.” I froze. My mouth opened, but nothing came out. “Do yourself a favour,” he said. “Forget about it. And don’t ever mention this again, not to me or anyone else.” Then he walked away, leaving silence in his place. My knees gave out and I dropped to the cold tile and curled into myself. This wasn’t how it was supposed to go. This wasn’t the dream I had when I wished to meet Logan. I thought finding my mate would make me feel whole. Instead, it shattered everything I believed in. And for the first time in my life, I didn’t know if the moon goddess had blessed me… Or ruined me. Inside me, my wolf let out a cry so hollow, so raw, it felt like the echo would never end. I managed to stand and walk back to my room. The second my door closed, I collapsed. The pain of his rejection was nothing like I imagined. I had read about it, seen it in movies, and in the stories passed between girls in my old pack. But nothing prepared me for the way my soul felt like it had been set on fire from the inside out. He rejected me like I was something shameful. My wolf hadn’t stopped crying since. She whimpered constantly in the back of my mind, pacing in circles, wounded and confused. I felt her pain like it was my own because it was. She was part of me.
