Chapter 3: The Breaking Point

1225 Words
Emma’s breaking point came three days later. The past seventy-two hours had been a storm of speculation. The blurry photo of her with an unknown man outside Sugar & Spice had dominated the headlines. "Emma Cross: Secret Meetings & Scandal—Who Is She Hiding?" "Trouble in Paradise? Billionaire’s Wife Caught in Suspicious Encounter." Adrian had handled it the way he handled everything—calm, controlled, ruthless. “Deny everything,” he had told her. “The less you react, the faster this will die.” But Emma? She wasn’t built for this game. She wasn’t built for playing pretend while the world picked apart her life. She barely had time to breathe before they were shoved into another public appearance this time, a televised interview for one of the country’s biggest morning talk shows. It was meant to be easy. Controlled. A chance to solidify their love story. But it went horribly, horribly wrong. The Interview That Changed Everything The studio lights blazed down on them, hot and unforgiving. Emma sat beside Adrian on the plush white couch, feeling like she was trapped inside a glass box—a place where every movement, every expression, every hesitation could and would be analyzed by millions of people watching at home. Their host, Marissa Lane, was a woman known for smiling while she tore people apart. And right now? She was circling them like a shark. “So, Emma,” Marissa said, crossing one leg over the other, her gaze piercing. “You went from being a simple baker to marrying one of the most powerful men in the country practically overnight.” She tilted her head, voice syrupy sweet. “Tell us was it love at first sight?” Emma knew the script. She was supposed to smile, maybe blush a little, and say something romantic. Something believable. But her mind short-circuited. She hesitated. Just for a second. But it was enough. Marissa’s eyes gleamed with predatory curiosity. “That pause was interesting,” she mused. “Is there something more to the story?” Emma scrambled. “No! I just I mean, it was… unexpected.” Marissa’s smile sharpened. “Unexpected?” Emma’s pulse pounded. She needed to fix this. She needed to salvage the moment before it spiraled completely out of control. But before she could find the right words, Adrian recovered for her. He let out a low, warm chuckle, his hand sliding over hers in a perfectly timed gesture of reassurance. “You’ll have to excuse my wife,” he said smoothly, his voice effortlessly charming. “She still gets flustered when she talks about our love story.” His thumb stroked the back of her hand, slow and deliberate. A silent command—get back into character. Emma forced a smile, nodding. “Yes. It was… fast. But perfect.” Marissa’s expression didn’t change. But the damage had already been done. The Fallout Begins The second they stepped off set, Adrian’s grip on her wrist tightened. Emma barely had time to register what was happening before he dragged her into a secluded hallway, away from the flashing cameras and production crew. “What the hell was that?” His voice was low, controlled but there was an edge to it. Emma yanked her arm free. “What was what?” Adrian let out a sharp breath. “That hesitation, Emma. That was all Marissa needed. Do you realize how many headlines are going to come from this?” Emma bristled. “I tried to fix it” “No, I fixed it,” Adrian cut in, cold and precise. “You hesitated, and now the entire country is going to be questioning whether this marriage is real.” Emma laughed bitterly. “Oh, right. Because that’s the worst thing that could happen, isn’t it? Not the fact that this whole marriage is a damn lie but that the world might finally see it too.” Adrian’s jaw ticked. “You think this is just about us?” he said, his voice quieter now, more dangerous. “This isn’t just about me, Emma. Or about you. It’s about the company. The investors. The image we’ve built.” “The image you’ve built,” Emma shot back. “I never asked to be part of your carefully curated world, Adrian. I never wanted this.” Adrian took a slow step closer. “Then why are you still here?” Emma’s breath hitched. Because she couldn’t answer that question. Because the truth the real truth was one she wasn’t ready to admit. Not to him. Not to herself. Victoria Strikes Again By the time they got back to the penthouse, Emma was emotionally exhausted. She wanted to disappear into her room, bury herself in the blankets, and pretend the entire day hadn’t happened. But fate had other plans. Because waiting for them in the penthouse was Victoria. She was seated on one of Adrian’s designer couches, sipping a glass of wine like she owned the place. “Adrian,” she purred, standing gracefully. “I thought I’d drop by. It’s been a while since we’ve… talked.” Emma stopped breathing. Adrian’s body went rigid beside her. “Victoria, what the hell are you doing here?” Victoria smiled sweetly. “Oh, I just wanted to check in. You know, after that little disaster of an interview today.” Emma’s stomach dropped. She knew. Of course, she knew. She had probably watched it live, reveling in every second of Emma’s slip-up. Victoria took another step forward, gaze flicking between them with amused calculation. “You looked so nervous on camera, Emma,” she said, faux concern dripping from her voice. “Are you sure everything is… alright in paradise?” Emma’s fists clenched at her sides. “We’re fine.” Victoria smiled. “Hmm. That’s funny. Because the media doesn’t seem to think so.” She reached into her designer bag, pulling out a folded newspaper. And when she turned it around, Emma’s blood ran cold. Because there on the front page was a new headline. “Adrian Cross’s Marriage A Perfectly Scripted Lie?” And beneath it? A side-by-side comparison of their interview and Adrian’s past interviews with Victoria. "Watch the Body Language Did Adrian Seem More In Love With His Ex-Fiancée?" Emma’s world tilted. Victoria let the newspaper drop onto the coffee table. Then, with a smirk, she delivered the final blow. “I wonder, Adrian,” she mused. “What will your investors say when they realize they’ve been sold a fairy tale?” Emma’s pulse pounded in her ears. Adrian’s face was unreadable. Victoria’s trap had been set perfectly. And the worst part? Emma wasn’t sure if Adrian would fight for their marriage or let it crumble. Theme: When the Lie Becomes the Truth Emma and Adrian created a fake love story to protect their worlds. But now? The lines between pretend and real are blurring. And soon? Neither of them will be able to tell the difference. Cliffhanger Ending: The Turning Point ● Victoria has launched her first attack how will Adrian respond? ● Will Emma finally admit to herself that she’s falling for Adrian? ● Will Adrian fight for their marriage or let Victoria win? ● Can they keep up the lie… or is it already too late?
