The rest of lunch went by faster than I expected.
Which was strange.
Because usually, lunch feels like foreverâespecially when youâre stuck listening to Matilda argue about something pointless or Hilda trying to act like the voice of reason.
But today?
It didnât drag.
And I hate that I know why.
I packed my tray and stood up, slinging my bag over my shoulder.
âI have class,â I announced.
âNo you donât,â Hilda said without looking up from her phone.
I paused.
âWhat?â
âYou have free period next,â she added casually.
Traitor!
I narrowed my eyes at her. âAnd you didnât think to mention that earlier?â
She smiled innocently. âYou looked busy.â
I followed her gaze.
Straight to Kaiden.
I scoffed.
âI wasnât busy.â
âSure,â Matilda muttered.
I ignored them and turned to leave.
âRunning away?â Kaidenâs voice came from behind me.
I stopped.
Slowly turned.
âI donât run,â I said simply.
âThen stay,â he replied, resting back in his chair.
Like it was that easy.
Like I had nothing better to do.
Well, you do have nothing better to do now.
Shut up!
I stared at him for a second⊠then sighed and dropped my bag back on the chair.
âFive minutes,â I said, pointing at him.
âDonât get used to it.â
Ryker grinned. âShe came back. I like this girl.â
âDonât,â I said flatly.
Finn chuckled under his breath.
Kaiden didnât say anything.
But that small smirk?
Still there.
Annoying.
Not!
âSince youâre not running,â he said, âwhat do you actually do during free periods?â
I raised an eyebrow.
âWhy?â
âSo I know where not to go.â
I stared at him.
Then nodded slowly.
âGood answer.â
Hilda snorted.
Matilda shook her head. âYou two are something else.â
I leaned back slightly. âAnd you talk too much.â
âRude,â she muttered.
âSo?â Kaiden pressed. âAnswer the question.â
I crossed my arms. âI like quiet places.â
âThat explains a lot.â
âExplains what?â
âYou.â
I frowned.
âYouâre starting to sound like you know me.â
âIâm trying to,â he said simply.
There it was again.
That tone. Not playful. Not teasing.
Just⊠honest.
I looked away first, trying not to feel affected by it.
âTry harder,â I muttered.
âI plan to.â
Before I could respond, the bell rang.
Finally!
I grabbed my bag immediately.
âTimeâs up,â I said.
âSee you around, Allison,â Ryker called.
âMaybe,â I replied without looking back.
âDefinitely,â Kaiden added.
I didnât respond.
But I heard it.
And somehowâŠ
It stayed.
The hallway was packed as usual.
Students rushing, laughing, pushing past each other like their lives depended on it.
I walked beside Hilda and Matilda, both unusually quiet.
Suspicious.
âWhat?â I asked.
They exchanged a look.
Thenâ
âYou like him,â Hilda said.
I stopped walking.
âWhat?â I blinked.
âYou like Kaiden,â Matilda repeated.
I laughed.
Actually laughed.
âYou guys are funny.â
âWeâre serious,â Hilda said.
âI met him yesterday.â
âAnd today,â Matilda added.
âThat doesnât mean anything.â
âThe way you look at him does.â
I scoffed. âI donât look at him.â
âYou do.â
âI donât.â
âYou literally just did.â
I opened my mouthâ
Then closed it.
Annoying.
âYou two need help,â I muttered and continued walking.
They followed, still whispering to themselves.
Traitors!
They can't just conclude that I like him just like that, Kaiden is drama and trouble combined... which I don't need for my senior year.
I didnât go to class... Cos I'm still on free period.
Of course.
Instead, I found myself walking up the stairs.
To the rooftop.
My steps slowed as I reached the door.
For a second, I hesitated.
Will he be there?
Oh my God, what am I thinking?
Then pushed it open.
The cool breeze hit my face immediately.
Calm.
Quiet.
Perfect.
I stepped out fullyâ
And froze.
He was there.
Again.
Kaiden.
Sitting in the same spot as yesterday.
Like he belonged there.
Like this was his place too.
He looked up.
And smiled.
âYou again,â he said.
I crossed my arms. âDonât get used to it.â
âToo late.â
I rolled my eyes and walked further in, dropping my bag beside my usual spot.
âDo you just skip classes now?â he asked.
âDo you?â I shot back.
He chuckled softly. âTouchĂ©.â
"Besides I'm still on free period, remember?... And my next class is drama, Mrs Ben knows I can't act to save my life so she gave up on me a long time" I explained as I sat down, keeping a bit of distance between us.
Not too close.
Not too far.
Silence fell.
But it wasnât uncomfortable.
Just⊠quiet.
âSo,â he said after a while. âThis is your âquiet placeâ?â
I glanced at him. âDonât ruin it.â
âI wonât.â
âYou already are.â
He smirked. âYou stayed.â
I paused.
He wasnât wrong.
âI like the view,â I said quickly.
âSure you do.â
I ignored that.
He leaned back, looking up at the sky.
âFor someone who says she doesnât run, you avoid people a lot.â
âI donât avoid people.â
âYou left lunch.â
âI had nothing to say.â
âYou always have something to say.â
I turned to him. âYouâre very observant.â
âI have to be.â
âWhy?â
He hesitated.
Then shrugged. âHabit.â
I studied him for a moment.
There was more behind that answer.
But I didnât push.
Not my business.
âSoâŠâ he said, turning to me. âWhatâs your deal?â
I blinked. âMy deal?â
âYeah. Youâre not like the others.â
âOthers?â
âThe girls here.â
I scoffed. âThatâs your problem. You compare too much.â
âOr maybe you stand out.â
I held his gaze for a second.
Then shook my head.
âYou talk too much.â
âAnd you deflect too much.â
I smirked slightly.
âMaybe.â
He smiled again.
And this timeâ
I didnât look away immediately.
I like his smile!
*********
Back downstairs, across the buildingâ
Hailey stood by her locker, her arms folded as she watched the hallway.
Students passed by, laughing, talking, moving like nothing mattered.
But her attention?
Fixed.
âAre you going to stand here all day or actually go to class?â Pinkie asked, leaning against the locker beside her.
Hailey didnât answer immediately.
Her eyes followed a familiar figure walking down the hall.
Kaiden.
He walked casually, hands in his pockets, Finn and Ryker beside him like always.
Nothing new.
Nothing different.
Exceptâ
âIsnât thatâŠâ Ashley trailed off.
Haileyâs gaze shifted slightly.
And there she was.
Allison.
Walking a few steps behind, with Hilda and Matilda beside her.
Not together.
Not exactly.
But close enough.
Too close.
Haileyâs expression didnât change.
But the air around her did.
Colder.
Sharper.
âSo itâs true,â Sarah said quietly. âThey were at the same table during lunch.â
âI saw it too,â Grace added. âEveryone did.â
Pinkie glanced at Hailey carefully. âYou okay?â
Hailey let out a soft, humorless laugh.
âWhy wouldnât I be?â
No one answered.
Because the answer was obvious.
Her eyes returned to Kaidenâ
Just in time to see him glance back.
Not at her.
At Allison.
It was quick.
Subtle.
But Hailey caught it.
And that was enough.
Her jaw tightened slightly.
âThatâs new,â Ashley muttered.
Haileyâs lips curved into a small smile.
Not a happy one.
âRelax,â she said calmly. âItâs nothing.â
âNothing?â Pinkie raised a brow. âHe hasnât looked at anyone like that sinceââ
âSince me?â Hailey cut in smoothly.
Silence.
She pushed herself off the locker.
âHeâs bored,â she continued, adjusting her bag on her shoulder. âThatâs all.â
âAnd Allison?â Sarah asked.
Hailey glanced in Allisonâs direction again.
This timeâ
Longer.
More calculated.
âShe doesnât know what sheâs doing yet,â she said lightly.
Pinkie frowned. âAnd when she does?â
Haileyâs smile didnât fade.
âWeâll see.â
She turned and started walking down the hallway, her friends quickly falling in step behind her.
âBut one thing is certainâŠâ she added softly.
Her voice calm.
Controlled.
âPeople should learn to stay in their place.â
Meanwhileâ
âAllison!â Hilda called, pulling me back from my thoughts.
âWhat?â I responded, slightly distracted.
âYou zoned out again.â
âI didnât.â
âYou did,â Matilda said.
I sighed. âI was just thinking.â
âAbout?â Hilda pressed.
I hesitated for a second.
Then shrugged.
âNothing important.â
But that wasnât entirely true.
Because for some reasonâ
My mind kept drifting back to him.
And I didnât like that.
Not one bit.
And I can feel it. This year is going to be different cos I can see Kaiden in it... I hope it doesn't come with lots of drama cos I can't act for the life of me.
