Twenty-twoCalifornia was run from the Sacramento Capitol building, a domed masterpiece modeled on Washington’s White House, where Henry Hunt, the current governor, had sat down to business for the last few years, as completion of the construction continued around him. It was an immense building, three lofty stories in Roman Corinthian style, set in the center of four city blocks of park traversed by granite walks, native tree plantings and flower beds, still being terraced and planted. The Vino d’Oro principals proceeded up granite steps through the imposing rotunda, seventy-two feet in diameter and rising through the height of the first dome.
