CHAPTER 19

THE TRUTH The confession came on a rainy Tuesday, delivered in Dante's study with the weight of years behind it. They had been living together for a month. A month of passion and laughter, of shared meals and stolen moments, of a deepening intimacy that went far beyond the physical. Bella had settled into a routine—mornings with Dante, afternoons exploring the estate or studying the art collection, evenings wrapped in his arms. She had stopped thinking of herself as a captive and started thinking of herself as... his. In every way that mattered. But there were still secrets between them. Shadows that Dante kept carefully hidden, compartments of his life that were locked away from her view. Tonight, one of those compartments opened. "I need to tell you something," Dante said, his voice serious. He sat behind his desk, his expression grave, his fingers steepled beneath his chin. "Something I should have told you from the beginning." Bella sat across from him, her heart hammering. "What is it?" Dante was silent for a long moment, gathering his thoughts. When he spoke, his voice was quiet, measured, carrying the weight of truth. "Your father's debt—the two million—it's real. He owes that money, and more, to various people across the city. But Bella—" He met her eyes, his expression pained. "That's not why I took you." Bella felt a chill run down her spine. "What do you mean?" "I mean I would have taken you regardless. The debt was... convenient. An excuse. A justification I could use with my men, with the other families, with myself." He stood, moving around the desk to kneel before her chair, taking her hands in his. "But the truth is, I saw you and I knew. I knew you were meant for me. I knew I would move heaven and earth to make you mine. And I used your father's debt because it was easier than admitting the truth." "Which is?" "That I'm a selfish, obsessive bastard who saw something he wanted and decided to take it, consequences be damned." His grip tightened on her hands. "I told myself I was protecting you. That your father would have gotten you killed with his gambling, that the Benedettis or someone worse would have targeted you to get to him. And maybe that's true. But it's not the real reason, Bella. The real reason is that I looked at you and I felt something I had never felt before. Something I couldn't control. Something I didn't want to control." Bella stared at him, processing his words. "So my father's debt..." "Is real. And I've handled it. He's been moved to a safe location, his debts to other creditors have been paid, and he's being monitored to ensure he doesn't gamble again." Dante paused. "But I would have paid those debts ten times over just for the chance to know you. To be with you. To love you." "You planned this," Bella whispered, the realization dawning. "From the moment you saw me, you planned to take me." "Yes." "The clothes in my closet, the art books, the flowers—" "All planned. All part of my campaign to win you over." Dante's expression was tormented. "I know it's manipulation. I know it's wrong. But Bella, I was desperate. I had spent my entire life surrounded by people who feared me, who wanted something from me, who saw me as a means to an end. And then I saw you—brave, defiant, completely uninterested in my power—and I knew that if I didn't find a way to keep you, I would spend the rest of my life empty." Bella pulled her hands free, standing up and moving away from him. Her mind was reeling, her emotions a tangled mess of betrayal and understanding. He had manipulated her from the start. Every gesture, every gift, every moment of tenderness had been calculated. She had been a target, a project, a conquest. But even as the anger rose, she remembered the man behind the manipulation. The boy who had lost his parents and raised his siblings. The Don who carried the weight of an empire on his shoulders. The lover who looked at her like she was the only thing that mattered in his world. "I should be furious," she said quietly. "You should be." "I should hate you for this." "You probably should." Bella turned to face him, her eyes wet but her voice steady. "But I don't. I don't hate you, Dante. I understand you. I understand that you've spent your whole life fighting for everything you have, and that you don't know how to ask for what you want. You only know how to take it." Dante stood, his expression vulnerable in a way she had never seen before. "I'm trying to learn, Bella. I'm trying to be better. For you." "I know." She walked back to him, stopping just out of reach. "And that's why I'm still here. Not because of the manipulation, or the gifts, or the carefully planned seduction. But because underneath all of that, there's a man who loves me so much he's willing to change. Willing to grow. Willing to admit when he's wrong." She reached out, her hand resting on his chest, feeling his heart race beneath her palm. "I love you, Dante. The real you. Not the Don, not the strategist, not the man who plans campaigns like military operations. I love the boy in the nursery who promised to protect his family. I love the man who cooks me breakfast and watches terrible movies with me and holds me when I have nightmares." She rose on her toes, pressing a soft kiss to his lips. "I love you. Manipulation and all." Dante's arms came around her, crushing her to him, his face buried in her neck. She felt wetness against her skin and realized, with a shock, that he was crying. "I don't deserve you," he whispered, his voice broken. "I don't deserve your forgiveness, your understanding, your love. But God help me, Bella, I will spend every day of my life trying to be worthy of it." "You already are," she whispered back. "You already are." They held each other in the study, surrounded by the trappings of power and wealth, two broken people finding wholeness in each other's arms. And as the rain washed against the windows, cleansing the world outside, Bella felt something shift inside her—a final acceptance, a deep peace, a certainty that she was exactly where she was meant to be. ---
