Murphy

Lurking in the shadows on the side of the garage I watched the girls pull in. I was feeling very nervous. There were so many ways this could go wrong. I still didn’t know how I was going to tell her what I did. How I saved her was forbidden on so many levels. I intervened, I fell in love, and I used forbidden magic to bind her to me. I couldn’t imagine the rest of my life without her in it.                      She got out of the car and instantly looked uncomfortable. I stepped out of the shadows and walked to her, shoving my hands in my pockets so I wouldn’t touch her.                      “Ladies.” I said. She turned around. She looked amazing. I had never seen her in a dress or her makeup like this, it was such a drastic difference from how I usually see her. She looked me up and down, a small smile on her lips.                      “Murphy.” Marilyn said with some venom. What the hell did I do to piss her off? She was not a girl to be messed with. I had seen her while defending Everly before and she is a force. She came between us and set her shoulders.                      “Everly told me everything, I appreciate what you did for her. Make no mistake if you hurt her, I will take you down.” Everly turned red and looked anywhere but at me. Marilyn’s eyes flashed red, how interesting. I nodded my head.                      “Understood.” I don’t think she believed me though. She spoke to Everly and then walked to the house where Duncan was waiting for her. He slid his arm around her waist and led her inside.                      “What did you tell her?” I asked quietly. She put her hands in her jacket pockets and looked at her feet.                      “Everything I could remember. How I waited for you to come back and you didn’t.” She said quietly.                      “I know that you have questions and I will do my best to answer everything, please know that I didn’t want to stay away.” She looked at me then, assessing whether or not I was bullshitting her. She just nodded her head.                      “I have a fire going out back, or we could talk in the garage, we will be alone in either place.” I said. She seemed to think about it for a second.                      “I do love a good fire.” She said with a smile. I motioned her to the side of the house. She followed the glow of the fire around the house to the back yard. I had set up large logs around the pit, I had dug it and lined it with bricks this morning. It had been a long time since I had been able to do anything like it. It felt good to do something so mundane while making it special for her too.                      She smoothed her dress under her thighs and sat, putting her hands towards the flames to warm them. I sat down putting an open seat between us, my elbows resting on my knees. I waited for her to say something, anything. She was quiet for a long time and I thought that she wouldn’t say anything at all.                      “What are you? I know that you aren’t human, either of you.” She looked at me, her eyebrows raised.                      “That is difficult to answer.” I said. She shook her head and stood up turning to leave.                      “No, please, don’t go. You have to understand this is hard for me.” She left her back to me for a moment before turning back to me, tears in her eyes. I was standing in front of her, my hands on her arms, before I could even think about what I was doing.                      “I am trying, please let me.” I said, careful not to touch her skin. She swiped away a tear that had fallen and nodded. She sat back down, her hands in her lap.                      “Duncan and I are guardians. We are descendant from titans, tasked with keeping the human world ignorant of the otherworld.”                      “Why come back now?” She demanded.                      “I have watched over you since that night and I couldn’t stay away anymore. I had to be near you, no matter what.”                      “Why not just take me with you that night? Why did you leave me?” I shook my head; she was going to be the death of me.                      “The night I saved you I broke the laws of our world. Don’t intervene, don’t fall in love.” Her eyes got wide.                      “You saved me because you loved me?” She asked shocked. I laughed at the scandalized look on her face.                      “No. I saved you and kept watch. It wasn’t until about a year ago that I really fell in love with you. You had just thrown down with a guy that had been saying some less than flattering things about you. He must have had a foot on you and you still knocked his ass out.” She laughed and her eyes lit up at the memory.                      “Trent was such a d**k. He deserved it.” She said, her gaze on the fire.                      “He did at that.” She glanced at me. “I know everything about you, Everly, I want nothing more than the chance to be what you need. I cant tell you how many times I stood on your balcony begging you to wake up so I could run away with you.”                      “Why can’t you love?”                      “We can love amongst our kind, but to love a human is forbidden. Humans are not supposed to know anything about us. That has been our way for centuries. It is punishable by death.”                      “Why would you risk it then? Telling me and coming here? I am not worth dying for!” She looked so scared in that moment that I couldn’t hold it back any longer and I took her hands in mine. Her heart started racing as she saw all of what I had seen for the last 5 years. She saw herself through my eyes, felt what I felt as she went on with her life. Tears ran down her cheeks, I broke the connection and wiped them away with my thumbs. Put her hands over mine.                      “Is that really how you see me? How you feel?”                      “Every bit of it. You were dying the night I found you. I…I did something really not good to save you.”                      “Worse than murder?” She laughed. I looked away.                      “Murphy, please.”                      “I used magic, to bind your life force with mine.”                      “What does that mean?”                      “It means that you will be just like me.” I said quietly. Her hands dropped to her side as she fainted. Well, that could definitely gone better. I picked her up and carried her into the house.
