Chapter 1: The Gates of Radebe Estate

303 Words
The gates of the Radebe estate rose taller than anything Leyano had ever stood before — black iron twisted into shapes that looked almost alive in the afternoon light. She adjusted the strap of her bag on her shoulder and told herself, for the tenth time that morning, that this was just a job. A room, a wage, a fresh start. Nothing more. The intercom crackled before she could even find a buzzer. "Name?" "Leyano," she said, straightening her spine. "I'm here about the housekeeping position." A pause. Longer than it should have been. Then the gates groaned open. The driveway alone was longer than the street she'd grown up on. Marble lions guarded the front steps, and the house itself loomed pale and silent behind them, its windows catching the sun like watching eyes. Leyano had seen wealth before — cleaned other people's mansions, scrubbed other people's floors — but something about this house felt different. Heavier. Like it was holding its breath. A woman met her at the door before she could knock. Tall, elegant, dressed in gray that probably cost more than Leyano's monthly rent. "You're late," the woman said, though Leyano was three minutes early. "I apologize, Mrs.—" "Radebe. Mrs. Radebe." Her eyes swept over Leyano once, assessing, cataloguing. "Come in. And Leyano — a word of advice, free of charge." Leyano waited. "In this house, we don't ask questions we don't want answered." Mrs. Radebe's smile didn't reach her eyes. "You'll find your work here… simpler, if you remember that." The door closed behind her with a soft, final click. Leyano stood in the marble entrance hall, the scent of lilies and something colder underneath it filling her lungs, and thought: What have I walked into? She didn't yet know how right she was to ask.
