16 Mateo restrained himself all through the day. Concentrating on patients while Abigail sat by her father’s bedside was one of the hardest things he’d ever done, but he managed to get through without misdiagnosing anyone. Later that evening when Nick finally dismissed them from their ten hour shift, he made an excuse to Shanya and the other residents and then crept up the stairs to the Recovery Unit. They all waved at him with red-eyes and sunken expressions as they prepared to spend the night at the hospital. He’d join them as soon as he made sure Abigail was alright. Mateo’s steps never faltered, despite his uncertainty about the reception he would get when he arrived. Undoubtedly, Paul would put up a fight. The man had been very clear about his desire for Mateo to keep his distance.
