Whatever You Want

As the sun started to dip low in the sky, Greg realized he had dragged things out a bit too far. They wouldn’t be able to get these papers notarized today. His mom would be miffed, but he would get it done tomorrow. The ice had thawed a bit between them, he noticed. The conversation wasn’t as clipped and she seemed visibly more relaxed interacting with him. He considered these things to be good. “Jayne?” “Please, call me Jay.” She said that as she turned to look at him. He frowned at her words, “I like Jayne, like Jayne Kennedy. It suits you.” At that she showed the most brilliant smile. “Well, whatever you want.” “Whatever I want?” He couldn’t call the words back now, they had been said. She flushed and he could’ve swore her n*****s started to stand up and asked to be recognized at that moment. He was sure that they would not have gone unnoticed this long if they had always been protruding as they were now. “Well, it’s late, I’m sure you’re tired from the drive. Just give me or mom a shout when you’re ready to head to the notary.” He was gathering his jacket, when he heard, “Actually, I’m feeling kinda wired right now.” “Oh yea? Care for a nightcap?” Greg was doing everything in his natural power to keep calm and sound casual, but he wanted her to say yes. He felt calm in her presence, and he was not very familiar with calm. “Sure.” Her reply finally came. “Cool, I’m going to run home and grab us something. You like white or dark.” She hesitated a moment then “Dark.” The answer shocked him but he could oblige. “Alright, I’ll be just a minute.” He turned to leave, but she stopped him, “I was gonna hop in the shower, so you don’t have to rush back.” The thought of her in the shower gave him a smile. “I’ll jump in the shower myself then to give you time, because I don’t live far at all.” “Oh, where do you live?” “Next door.”
