Chapter 6

Lucas led me out of the bar, his hand hovering just behind the small of my back, guiding me through the bustling sidewalk. The cool night air was a welcome contrast to the warmth lingering from our drinks, but it did nothing to settle the heat still simmering between us. When we reached the curb, he pressed a small key fob, and a sleek black Audi RS 4 lit up in response. My brows shot up in surprise. “This is yours?” Lucas smiled at my reaction, opening the passenger door with an exaggerated flourish. “Expecting something less refined?” I hesitated for a moment before slipping inside. “Honestly? Maybe a motorcycle. Or something a little less… luxury speed demon.” He laughed, the rich sound wrapping around me as he slid into the driver’s seat. “I like power and control, Eloise. This gives me both.” The way he said it sent a pleasant shiver down my spine. The low rumble of the engine only added to the tension as he pulled away from the curb, navigating the city streets with practiced ease. A comfortable silence settled between us for a few minutes, broken only by the soft hum of the radio. But the charged air in the cabin was impossible to ignore. “You look good tonight,” Lucas said suddenly, his voice lower, more intimate. I turned my head to him, my pulse skipping. “I – thanks. I mean, I wasn’t exactly dressed up. We just went for drinks right after work.” He gave me a slow once-over before focusing back on the road. “Doesn’t matter. You could be in an oversized hoodie, and you’d still catch my attention.” I swallowed hard, trying to suppress the warmth creeping up my neck. “Flatter me all you want, Lucas, but I’m onto you.” “Oh? And what exactly do you think I’m up to?” He shifted gears effortlessly, his fingers flexing around the steering wheel. The movement was absurdly captivating. I bit my lip, tilting my head slightly. “Trying to charm me. Get in my head.” Lucas chuckled, the sound deep and smooth. “And is it working?” Damn it. Yes. But I wasn’t about to give him that satisfaction. “Maybe,” I teased, turning to look out the window to avoid the weight of his stare. “But I’m not that easy, Lucas.” He hummed in amusement. “Good. I like a challenge.” The way he said it – slow, deliberate – sent a spark of anticipation through me. The air between us thickened, the city lights blurring outside as we drove in near silence, the tension louder than words. I shifted in my seat, pressing my thighs together. “How long have you had this car?” Lucas glanced at me, amused at my obvious attempt to change the subject. “A while. Fast, smooth, and reliable. What more could I want?” “You really are a man of taste, aren’t you?” I mused, running my fingers along the soft leather interior. He smirked. “I know what I like.” The weight of his words settled heavily between us, my mind spinning with possibilities. Lucas had always been flirty, but this – this was something else. Something new. By the time we reached my building, I wasn’t sure if I was relieved or disappointed that the ride was over. Lucas pulled to a stop, his fingers tapping lightly against the gear shift as he turned to me. “You sure you don’t want me to walk you up?” he asked, his voice deceptively casual. I met his gaze, knowing full well that nothing about this moment was casual. “Tempting, but I think I can manage.” Lucas grinned, but there was something unreadable in his eyes. “Sweet dreams, Eloise.” I exhaled slowly, stepping out of the car, feeling his gaze on me the entire way to the door. As I closed it behind me, I leaned against the wood, my heart still racing. It was nice meeting Lucas for drinks tonight, after the stressful day I had just had, but for some reason, thinking back on today’s events, I feel all hot and bothered. My face feels hot and this flutter I feel in my chest… I haven’t felt this in a while. Lucas and Cassian are both very beautiful men, intriguing, sinful. Sin is this attraction I feel for both of them. Tomorrow, I would make damn sure both Lucas and Cassian noticed me. I craved their attention, and I wasn’t going to pretend otherwise anymore.
