Maya's heart was pounding so loud she thought it would burst.
The closet door had slammed shut.
But the breathing didn't stop. It was still there.
Then came the whisper.
Right next to her ear, even though the closet was closed.
"Maya..."
Her full name. Nobody called her that except her mom.
Her legs gave out. She fell to the floor.
Tap. Tap. Tap.
Footsteps. Slow. Walking around her in the dark room.
Circling her like a predator.
"Maya, why did you open it?" the voice asked.
It wasn't Daniel's voice. It was deeper. Older.
Maya covered her mouth with both hands. Don't scream. Don't scream.
If she screamed, what would happen?
The footsteps stopped. Right in front of her.
Something cold touched her hair.
"Don't be scared," it whispered. "I'm here to play with you."
The lights in the hallway flickered.
Then everything went black
Maya couldn't breathe.
The darkness was complete. She couldn't see her own hands.
But she could feel it. Something was standing right in front of her.
Her phone was in her pocket. She needed light. She needed help.
Her shaking fingers fumbled for it.
Click.
The screen lit up her face. And what she saw made her drop the phone.
Standing there, inches from her, was a girl.
A girl with long black hair covering her face.
Wearing the same school uniform as Maya.
But Maya was the only one in the house.
The girl slowly raised her head.
Her eyes were completely black. No whites.
And she was smiling.
"Found you," the girl whispered with Maya's voice.
