The next morning, Elara woke to the sounds of wolves moving outside her window. Sunlight streamed through the blinds, lighting her small room. She dressed quickly, grabbed a water bottle, and headed toward the gym.
Lunaris stirred in her mind. Today is the day we learn where we stand. Keep your focus.
Elara exhaled slowly. I’m ready.
The training grounds were already alive with motion. Wolves ran drills, sparred, and practiced agility courses. Kaela waved her over.
“Good morning,” Kaela said. “Today we’ll start with basic sparring. Learn to anticipate, react, and read your opponent. Oh… and you’ll meet Rylan.”
Elara’s brow furrowed slightly. “Rylan?”
Kaela smiled faintly. “Your rival. You’ll recognize him quickly. He’s… competitive. Aggressive. Likes to push others to their limits. Don’t let him frustrate you. Consider it a challenge.”
Elara nodded. I can handle challenges.
A moment later, a tall, muscular wolf stepped forward. His amber eyes immediately locked on hers.
“You must be Elara,” he said, a smirk tugging at his lips. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Elara straightened. “I hope it’s good things.”
Rylan’s smirk widened. “You’ll find out soon enough.”
Kaela clapped her hands. “Alright, both of you. Shift.”
Elara let the change take over, bones realigning, fur sprouting, senses sharpening. She felt the familiar surge of energy as her wolf form took shape.
Rylan shifted as well, standing taller and broader than her. His presence radiated dominance.
Focus, Lunaris reminded her. This isn’t about winning yet. Observe, learn, adapt.
Kaela stepped back. “Begin!”
Rylan lunged instantly, teeth bared, claws extended. Elara dodged, twisting mid-air, narrowly avoiding a swipe. He circled her, testing, taunting.
“You’re fast,” he said. “But can you think ahead?”
Elara narrowed her eyes. We’ll see.
She feinted left, then pivoted right, closing distance and forcing him back slightly. A flicker of surprise crossed his face.
Not bad, Lunaris whispered. Keep pressure, maintain control.
Rylan’s smirk returned, sharper this time. “Not bad… but not enough.”
He lunged again, faster, more precise. Elara barely blocked him, the clash of claws and strength vibrating through her chest. Her heart raced, her wolf instincts screaming, but she didn’t falter.
This is exactly what we need, Lunaris murmured. A chance to grow.
The sparring continued for what felt like hours, each strike and dodge pushing her limits. She realized something—Rylan wasn’t just a rival. He was a mirror, reflecting where she needed to improve.
Finally, Kaela stepped between them. “Enough for now. Both of you. Rest.”
Elara shifted back, panting slightly but smiling faintly. Rylan did the same, his amber eyes still locked on hers.
“You’re stronger than I thought,” he said quietly. “Don’t get too comfortable. I’ll see you tomorrow.”
Elara nodded, a small spark of satisfaction in her chest. We’ll see…
Good first day, Lunaris said. Tomorrow, we push further.
Elara walked toward her quarters, adrenaline still coursing. For the first time since leaving the Silverfang Pack, she felt… capable. Strong. Maybe even ready for whatever came next.
