Lyla POV
Wandering out of my room and down the candlelit hallway, I passed several doors before taking a right towards the training room. We were underground, hence the candles. There was no electricity, but we were able to generate running water, which made life down here much more bearable for the 150 residents.
The high-pitched whine of metal clanging together filled my ears as I entered the room. Morning training was in full swing as I observed 50 odd people sparing and doing drills. This room was the size of a horse paddock, which meant there was plenty of room to train the way we needed to. I walked across the room towards a door which was our 'war room', as we called it. It was where we went to figure out how we were going to f**k s**t up in this god-forsaken Kingdom.
I opened the door and was met with 4 sets of nervous looking eyes. Trent was lounging on a worn sofa in the right-hand corner of the room. Eric was perched on top of a table that was in the center of the room. Leeroy and Eva were snuggled next to one another on the opposite couch to Trent. These were my closest confidants, who had been with me since I was a child.
The five of us ran this hidden haven that operated underneath the Kingdom. Trent was in charge of the planning of missions. The when, who and how as well as gathering Intel. Eric was in charge of the scheduling of training. That included adequate instructors and keeping tabs on who was the best and who needed extra training. Eva was the queen of supplies and finances. Leeroy was our in-house medic, having a goddess given gift to heal by the touch of the hand. Of course, Leerou always says it isn't as simple as that, but that is how I liked to look at it. He also trained others in first aid, often those that didn't cut it in training. Myself, I was in charge of the clients, prisoners, Intel and punishments. I was the unofficial leader of this rebellion.
"So, they're closing in I hear," I stated simply, as I dropped myself behind my desk, leaning back admiring the red dirt above. I giggled as I imagined how funny it would be if the roof caved in, wiping away all our hard work. Ironic it would be, no one would ever even know from the Kingdom above and the King would continue to search forever.
"I don't know what's so funny about that, Lyla. Without you this rebellion would fall apart in an instant," Eva grumbled at me with her arms crossed.
"That would not happen, Eva, you would all readjust and learn a new way of operating. We are survivors after all and, for the sake of Hybrids across the world, we must continue to grow and thrive." I looked around at them and sighed.
"I am about to embark on a longer mission than normal..." I began.
"You mean you're handing yourself over to the King," Trent interrupted, causing me to seethe. If there is one thing that truly irks me, it's being interrupted.
I bared my teeth before continuing. "I am. Of course, it'll be in the classic silk rose assassin way," I smirked, thinking about my already set plan. I had been masterminding it since I had learnt the King was on a rampage looking for me.
"No! It's suicide, and what of us? What are we meant to do without you!" Eric exclaimed.
"I have it under control and you will continue as though I am still here. Trent will take over the clients. Eric, you will assist with Intel and the 4 of you will handle inhouse punishments and the prisoners," I explained while lighting up a cigarette and setting my ash tray on my knee.
"Are you at least going to tell us of your plan or do we remain in the dark as normal?" I could sense the darkness in Trent's voice. He was holding his rage back, but only just.
"I will not tell you of my plan. However, we know that this has to be done. We cannot afford the King finding out about this place, it would be a m******e. Now that he has assigned the elite squad, it will only be a matter of time before the twins are knocking down the doors."
"How will we contact each other?" Leeroy spoke up for the first time, sounding calm as always. Even in the midst of a battle, he still managed to keep his composure. It was truly a sight to behold.
"I have contacts within the castle walls that will be able to get my messages back to you. We will set up password security so that you know that it's me," I said.
"I have been on plenty of missions before and you have all managed here without me."
"Yes, but we know this is going to be the most dangerous of them all. You are going into the wolf's den with literally no backup. There is a huge probability that you will die," Trent replied with no emotion.
Taking a couple puffs of my poison stick, I blew the smoke towards him. Relishing the fact that he couldn't avoid the plumes of smoke around him.
"As much as your lack of confidence in my survival ability tickles me pink, I have to say this..."
Leaning forward on my desk, I growled "f**k you," grinning evilly, knowing my eyes were pitch black.
"Okay, okay, that's enough you two. You have proven time again that you are the most capable here for a mission such as this. You just have to promise that you'll be careful... please," Eva whispered and she leant towards me.
"I promise."
"Now, we have 24 hours before the plan is set in motion. I have a lot to do before I leave."
"Oh, and just so you all know, no one is to know about this. If anyone asks my whereabouts, I am visiting relatives."
With that, I ashed out my cigarette and exited the room, not sparing a glance towards Trent. I knew it angered him as I heard a loud c***k followed by Eric angrily yelling at him just as the door shut behind me.
