Cuco’s pov: Pain dragged me back to the world. Not gently. Not all at once. I glanced around, realizing that I was at a hospital. “What happened?” My voice was hoarse as I spoke, my eyes falling on the guard at the door. “You fainted,” he replied. “Lost a lot of blood. You’re lucky that one of the other guards found you before they cracked your skull open.” Lucky. I tried to laugh, but my entire body felt like it was on fire. “The others?” I started. “What happened to them?” “They’re alive.” That wasn’t comforting. Maldini’s influence stretched long. This prison and the drug was his whole doing and the prisoners finding out about the bounty too. One thing was clear, the men wouldn’t stop coming for me and as long as I was in this prison, I was never going to be safe. “How long?”
