I stepped out of the car, plastering the widest smile I could muster on my face.
“Think, Cuco,” I thought to myself. “Think! They hadn’t declared me guilty yet. Looking guilty now would add to their suspicions.”
“Officers, what is going on?” Even I didn’t recognize my voice again due to the fake accent. “I had a long day and what I’d like is to be tangled somewhere under the sheets with my wife.”
The men narrowed their eyes at me as though they could see through my lies. I tried to peer at the picture in his hand, but it was too dark to see and I eventually gave up.
