Chapter 1: Waking Up in Darkness

1210 Words
Valeria Thanasis opened her eyes to a cold, damp room, the distant drip of water echoing through the silence. She tried to move, but her body felt heavy, sluggish as if weighed down by an unseen force. Panic surged through her veins. Where was she? This was not her bed, her home, or even her world. Her breathing quickened as the memories slammed into her consciousness. This was not her life. She was no longer in the world she knew. The sharp realization hit her like a blade—she had woken up inside a novel, a 19+ reverse-harem novel, no less, and not just as any character, but as Valeria Thanasis, the s******c older sister of the villain. Her pulse quickened. Valeria was doomed to die. In the story, the heroine, Seren Ulric, was destined to exact a b****y revenge on the entire Thanasis family, but Valeria’s death was particularly cruel, brought on by her own twisted actions. As the daughter of Darius Thanasis, a notorious figure feared throughout the realm, Valeria had been complicit in the family’s crimes. Her fate was sealed—unless she could change it. She sat up quickly, her head spinning from the sudden movement. Her surroundings were even worse than she had imagined. She was in a cell, cold stone walls pressing in from all sides. No, not a cell—a dungeon. Of course. Her family specialized in imprisoning and torturing their enemies. This must be the holding area for their latest victim. Suddenly, it all came back to her. The heroine’s younger brother, Kayden Ulric, had been captured by Darius, dragged into the depths of this hellish estate as a pawn in their twisted game. In the original plot, Kayden would be brutalized and eventually escape, but not before Valeria had tormented him as well. That was her role—the s******c sister. And for that, Seren would kill her in a b****y revenge that the readers had cheered on. But not this time. Valeria stood, unsteady on her feet, and walked slowly to the door of the dungeon. Her fingers brushed against the cold iron bars, and she flinched at how real everything felt. How could this be happening? One moment, she was living her life, reading this absurd novel as a guilty pleasure, and now... now she was inside it. And not as the heroine, but as the character everyone despised. She heard movement behind her and turned just in time to see one of the guards approach, a cruel smirk plastered on his face. “Milady,” he said with a mocking tone. “Your father wants to see you.” Valeria straightened, instinctively falling into the icy demeanor of the character she now inhabited. She needed to play this role—at least until she could figure out a way to survive. Without a word, she followed the guard, her mind racing. She had to think quickly, adapt to this new world, and most importantly, she needed to avoid the cruel fate that awaited her. The guard led her through a labyrinth of dark corridors until they arrived at the main hall. The doors swung open to reveal a grand, oppressive chamber, and at the far end sat Darius Thanasis, the man responsible for her inevitable doom. His presence was suffocating, the kind of aura that could chill a person to their core. "Valeria," Darius greeted her, his voice like gravel scraping over stone. "We have a guest." A shiver ran down her spine, but she forced herself to remain composed. She knew exactly who he was referring to—Kayden Ulric. The boy would be in chains, beaten but not broken, his spirit still uncrushed. That was why Seren would eventually come for him with a fury that would destroy everything in her path. She couldn’t let that happen. Valeria needed to change the game, to rewrite the story. But how? "Father," she replied coolly, keeping her tone sharp, like a blade. She had to be careful. Darius was no fool, and he wouldn’t hesitate to strike her down if he thought she had turned weak. Darius smiled, though it was more of a grimace. He gestured to the side, and two guards dragged a figure forward. There he was—Kayden Ulric. He was just as the novel described him: tall, even in his weakened state, with dark hair matted to his forehead, his piercing amber eyes burning with hatred and defiance. His body was bruised and battered, but he was very much alive. "Isn’t he a fine specimen?" Darius asked, clearly pleased with his latest catch. "The sister of this boy will tear herself apart to get him back. It’s only a matter of time before she walks into our trap." Valeria's mind raced. This was the turning point—the moment in the novel where she would be expected to torment Kayden, to prove her loyalty to her family’s cruel legacy. But she couldn’t do it. If she followed the story, she would meet her death soon enough. Her only option was to change everything. With measured steps, she approached Kayden. The guards flanked him, sneering, clearly eager for the show they expected. But Valeria had no intention of playing their game. She crouched down, meeting Kayden’s fierce gaze. There was hatred there, and rightly so. She represented everything he loathed. But she saw something else too—a flicker of uncertainty. Perhaps even hope. Valeria reached out, gently lifting his chin so that he had no choice but to look her directly in the eyes. She knew that in the original story, this was where her sadism would begin. She would taunt him, break him, delight in his suffering. But now... now was her chance to change everything. "Interesting," she murmured, loud enough for the guards and Darius to hear. She let her fingers linger on his chin for a moment before she withdrew. "I’m intrigued by this one." Darius raised an eyebrow, clearly surprised by her tone, but said nothing. Valeria stood and turned to face her father, a cruel smile curling on her lips, one that she had practiced to perfection. "I’ll take care of him," she said, her voice smooth and commanding. "Leave him to me." Darius chuckled darkly. "Just don’t kill him too quickly. We need him as bait." Valeria’s heart pounded, but she kept her expression cold and calculating. "Of course," she replied. As the guards dragged Kayden back to his cell, Valeria felt a weight lift off her shoulders. She had done it. She had altered the course of the story—at least for now. She had bought herself time, but more importantly, she had set the first piece in motion. Kayden was the key to her survival, and she would protect him. I’ll protect you, she thought, watching as the doors closed behind him. Until you can escape. And when you do, you’ll owe me. As she turned back to face her father, a new thought formed in her mind. She wasn’t just changing her fate. She was rewriting the entire story. And no one—not Darius, not Kayden, not even Seren—would be able to predict what she would do next.
