"... And this is where we get the supplies for restocking." Ryusei opens the door to the storage room, showcasing numerous boxes piled up.
While the job only required the basics of movement, I felt giddy throughout the tour Ryusei gave me. This was my first time working and I get to work with a pretty co-worker! During the whole duration of the tour, he's been nothing but kind to me even though I gave him such an embarrassing first impression. I've apologized numerous times about the incident-although there wasn't a need to, but I felt obliged- and he's mentioned many times that all was well and he didn't think much of it. Still, I can never recover from that shameful accident...
"I think that's all. If you ever need help with anything, just call for me or Emily." He grins, making my heart flutter. Ah, even his smile is pretty!
"Tha... Thank you for the tour. I greatly appreciate it."
"It's no problem at all! We have to help each other out."
I prayed to whatever God there was and thanked the stars for giving me the opportunity to be with him every time I take a shift. Our schedules seemed to have aligned but we had different day offs, but it was enough for me. As long as I get the chance to hear him sing again, I could rest peacefully forever.
"Hey, newbie! Welcome to the team!" Emily's voice rang from behind.
Emily was the younger cousin of the manager so she basically called the shots around here. But from what I could surmise just from her demeanor, she's a friendly and outgoing person. She helped me learn about the secrets and wonders of being in the cashier role, and I absorbed every word she uttered.
"Glad to be here." I politely smiled at her.
"What say we hold a little welcome party for Lucy?" Emily hooked an arm around my neck, "cake and drinks are on me!"
Ryusei brightened up when he heard of the idea, "Of course! We could do it this midnight since not many people come by at that time."
"Oh no, it's fine! I couldn't possibly let you spend your money on my account..." I bashfully waved my hands in disagreement. The idea was indeed fantastic but there was no need for them to do all that just for me!
"Nah, we insist! Plus I'm kind of craving some cakes now..." She scratched the back of her head. We all giggled. I feel like this is going to be a fun experience for me.
My first day was surprisingly fun. I mostly conversed with Ryusei the whole day but Emily would butt in and make the atmosphere more pleasant than ever.
I was guided by everyone the whole day so nothing bad happened. Considering the town being not so lively, we didn't have much costumers but it was fine.
After we were done for today, we gathered a few snacks and drinks and had a little party in the break room. They weren't as extravagant as the parties I'm usually invited in when I was a royal, but they were definitely more fun than eating biscuits with people who want to suck up to me.
I volunteered to clean up and Ryusei joined me in.
"Say," Ryusei started, "why'd you want the job anyway? You'd look like you'd do good in the entertainment industry."
I scratched the back of my head, "Ah.. haha, I guess I just wanted a more... less stressful? Haha.." There was no way I'm telling him he was the reason I wanted the job.
"Haha. Well, I won't judge you on that," He smiled, picking up the paper plates we used from the table, "this job isn't really considered one of the top-paying ones but it is fun."
He looked at the paper plates with such fondness that my heart melted. Sheesh, this guy was a real softie! And I don't even have complaints, I'm soft for this guy!
"What about you? What made you go for this job?"
"Hmm," he looked up, ".. I wanted to earn a bit of money for my living expenses."
"Ah, I understand."
...
Oh gosh, how do you communicate with a cute co-worker?!
"I'll sweep the floors so you can just wipe the table and you can go home after. It is getting pretty late."
Now that he mentioned it, it is pretty late. I checked the black watch on my wrist. 00:15. My shift started on twelve noon and ended on twelve in the midnight.
I nodded in agreement and started wiping the table clean. Once I was done, I took off my uniform which was a vest and hung it on the rack that was placed in my locker. I grabbed my bag and waved goodbye to Ryusei and headed for the exit.
Although the night made my way home a bit scary for me, the bright moon that illuminated my path brought me comfort. My apartment wasn't far, but it wasn't near either. I had to go through a few turns to reach my house which wasn't as awful as I'd think.
I put my hand in my bag, attempting to grab my phone from where I usually put it only to find nothing. I pat my pants' pockets but still no sign of the rectangular device. Panic settled in and I rummaged through my bag. Nothing.
Where did I put it? It's not in my bag and it's not in my pockets. Have I left it in the break room? My locker? Oh, but it was a pain to go back and get it...
Nonetheless, I turned and made my way back to the convenience store. I remember receiving a spare key for the back door for the break room and used it. Once I opened the door, I was met with a perfectly clean room with things that weren't there when I last entered it.
... What? My eyes scanned through every new stuff that appeared. A moon nightlight, stacks of books that were related to music, a beige guitar hanging on the wall, and a sheet fort.
Curiousity peaked my interest and I slowly walked to the sheet fort, my eyes wanting to take a look inside it.
There I saw a cute Ryusei peacefully sleeping on the soft, but cold futon.
