Chapter 5

1540 Words
After school that day, I went to the coffee shop where I work to start my shift. Sarah has done enough by letting me live with her. I don't expect her to support me financially so in order to survive, I had to get an after school job. It's stressful, considering the fact that I'm dealing with school work and house chores too but the good part is I have Bennie by my side. Bennie's my best friend and only friend. As we stood behind the counter, I filled her in on everything that happened in school. Bennie doesn't attend our school. She goes to a special theatre arts school out of town because that's what she wants to specialise in. "If Ava isn't careful, I will pour shaving cream in her shampoo bottle" she said "Or conditioner? Yeah. I think leave in conditioner will be better because it'll actually stay in her hair" I laughed "How would you get in her bathroom?" Bennie smirked "You'll see" Bennie isn't like me. I'm calm and submissive but Bennie is bold and daring. If she was in my school, she would have definitely gotten expelled for fighting. Ava wouldn't even dare bully me if Bennie was in our school. That's one of the things I love about her. She's fearless and she doesn't give a damn about what people say. We might be polar opposites but we get along just fine. We've been friends ever since we were little. She's the only person I can trust. She's the best friend a girl can ask for. We're the same height. She has shoulder length brunette hair with piercing brown eyes. One look at her and you can tell she's a fighter. "I don't know why you can't just punch her in the face" Bennie said "Or pull out her hair or something" I sighed "It's not that easy" "What's easy then? Is it easier for you to just take the bullying? What do you think will happen if you let her do whatever she wants to you? Come on, Emerald. You're better than that" I shrugged "If I blend in well enough, she'll ignore me. I've been doing a good job at being invisible till I poured a drink on her shirt" "You talk about it like it's your fault. I think I need to come to your school and have a one-on-one talk with Ava" I saw the serious expression on Bennie's face. In that moment, I knew she wasn't joking. Bennie has always been against the way Ava treats me. I knew it was only a matter of time before she decides to confront Ava. I'm glad this coffee shop is on the outskirts of the pack. Most people from my school don't come here which means I don't have to worry about bumping into Ava or any of her minions here. Assuming Ava did come here, she and Bennie would have had a serious confrontation and I know how bad Bennie's anger can get. "Please, don't" I said "It'll only make things worse. You're not in school to protect me. If you fight her, she'll just make my life a living hell" "Do you hear yourself?" Bennie shrieked "I'll protect you whenever I can but if I'm not there, you need to learn to do it yourself. You're strong. You need to put that girl in her place" It's easier said than done. Ava is not the type to let disrespect slide. She's mean to the core. If I stand up for myself, she'll feel challenged and will do her best to make me regret my actions. I've never been the problematic type. I prefer to just stay hidden and let things slide. I've been doing a good job at it for years. If only I hadn't poured that drink on her shirt, everything would have still been normal. She wouldn't bother me and I wouldn't be seen by her. But if you think about it.....if I didn't pour that drink on her, I would have never met Alex. He might have never noticed me. I guess something good came out of it. Bennie placed her hand on my shoulder "Look, I'm just trying to say you need to stand up for yourself. You deserve better than that" I nodded "I understand. It's just that, things aren't as easy as you think they are" She looked at me sympathetically "I know. Let's talk about something else. Something like...Alex" As soon as she said his name, I smiled. She gasped "Oh my days, you're blushing!" "I'm not" "Yes, you are. You are as red as a tomato, you slut" I hit her arm playfully "Shut up" She poked my stomach repeatedly "You like him" "I just met him. Besides, he wouldn't be bothered with someone like me especially when he has Ava" Bennie shook her head "I will never understand why someone as nice as Alex would date someone like that witch. Like, make it make sense!" "He's the future Alpha while her father is an executive member of The Council. They're the most popular and gorgeous people in school. That's the way the universe is supposed to be. They fit perfectly together" "Don't be so sure. From the way you described it, Alex might like you too" The thought of Alex liking me made my heart flutter. I stared into space, imagining a world where Alex and I could be together. I know I sound delusional. I mean, I just met the guy. Even at that, the thought of it feels right. There's something about him. I can't help this pull that I feel to him. Apart from the fact that he is drop dead gorgeous, he seems special. I can't put my finger on it exactly. The opening of the door brought me out from my thoughts. Bennie and I stood straight, ready to receive the customers. My heart dropped in my chest when I saw who it was. Ava, Lorie and Jenny walked in. What the f**k are they doing here? They've never come here before. Is Ava following me? Is she trying to make me pay because she thinks I want to take Alex away from her? Bennie laughed "Thank the moon goddess. I've been waiting for this day" "Bennie, don't" "Don't blame me, honey. This is fate. She literally walked in here out of her own will" Ava stood there on her phone. It was as if she was waiting for someone. Jennie and Lorie conversed while looking around. Suddenly, Lorie's eyes landed on me. I gulped. With a smirk on her face, she tapped Ava and whispered something to her. Ava's eyes landed on mine. "I think I should go to the back" I muttered. "Hell no. You are not going anywhere" This cannot end well. Ava and her minions walked closer to the counter where we stood. The sounds of their heels made noises as they moved. "Well well well" Ava said, looking directly at me "If it isn't the w***e of West View high" "w***e?" Lorie snickered "Who would want to f**k this thing?" "Say that one more time" Bennie said "I am begging you" Ava eyed her "Step aside. I wasn't talking to you" "You're talking to my friend. What concerns her concerns me" My heart beat loudly in my chest as I watched the scene unfold before me. I've been in the middle of drama lately. What did I do to deserve this? I'm literally okay with my boring life. Ava walked closer to the counter till she and Bennie were eye to eye. No doubt, Ava had finally met her match. "You're too unimportant for me to know who you are" Ava said "But I can tell you that you do not want to get on my bad side" Bennie placed her hands on the counter. Her claws came out fully. Bennie tapped her claws on the table "I do want to get on your bad side. One more rude word from you and I will scar that plastic face of yours" "Bennie" I said "Stop" "You heard her" Ava said "Emerald, come tame your b***h" I could see Bennie raise her hands. I quickly pulled her away from the counter. "Please Bennie" I muttered "You're only getting me into more trouble" Bennie glared at Ava for a long time before stomping away into the back room. Ava looked at me "Nice bodyguard. It won't do you any good though. I will deal with you if you cross my path again, got it?" I nodded "I got it" She and her friends walked away. They sat in the corner of the room. "Bennie" I called her "You can come out" Bennie stormed angrily out of the room. "I want to beat her up so bad!" Bennie said. "That won't fix anything" I looked outside. There I saw one person I didn't expect to see at all. Alex stood outside making a phone call. Him and Justin walked in. All of a sudden, the room felt too small. I felt as if the air from my lungs got restricted. "This just got a lot more interesting" Bennie said with a laugh.
