Episode 8: 'Shadows in the Night'
Mosun's instincts screamed at her to run, but her feet seemed rooted to the spot. Officer Adewale's smirk as he entered her flat sent a chill down her spine. He closed the door behind him, his eyes scanning the room like he owned the place.
"What do you want?" Mosun managed to spit out, trying to keep her voice steady.
Adewale chuckled, a low, menacing sound. "Just checking in on you, Mosun. You seemed... distressed at the station."
Mosun's mind raced. She knew she had to play this cool. "I'm fine. Just tired."
Adewale leaned against the door, his eyes never leaving hers. "Tired? Or scared? You know, I've been watching you, Mosun. You're poking into things that don't concern you."
The air was thick with tension. Mosun's phone buzzed on the couch – a message from an unknown sender: "Get out NOW."
Suddenly, Adewale lunged, grabbing her arm. "You think you're above the law, Mosun? You think you can just report me and walk away?"
Mosun's heart was pounding. She struggled to break free, but Adewale's grip was like a vice. "Let me go!"
Just as things seemed to escalate, the door burst open. Adeyemi stormed in, his eyes blazing. "Let her go, Adewale."
The officer sneered, but released Mosun. "This isn't over."
Adeyemi pulled Mosun behind him, his voice cold. "Get out. Now."
Adewale left, but the threat lingered. Mosun's breath was shaky as Adeyemi turned to her. "You okay?"
Mosun nodded, still processing. "How did you...?"
Adeyemi's expression was unreadable. "I was watching. Let's get you safe."
As he led her out into the Lagos night, the city streets seemed to close in around them. Mosun's mind was a whirlwind – who was Adeyemi, really? And what did he want?
They hailed a taxi, and Adeyemi gave the driver instructions to a safe house on the outskirts of Lagos. Mosun didn't argue – she trusted him, for now.
The ride was tense, both of them lost in thought. Mosun's phone buzzed again – another message from the unknown sender: "Tell Adeyemi to be careful."
Mosun's eyes met Adeyemi's. "Who's sending these messages?"
Adeyemi's jaw tightened. "Someone who wants to help. But we can't trust anyone, Mosun. Not yet."
They arrived at the safe house – a small, nondescript building in a quiet neighborhood. Adeyemi led her inside, checking the rooms before returning to her.
"We'll be safe here tonight," he said, his voice softer now. "But tomorrow, we need to talk."
Mosun nodded, her heart still racing. As Adeyemi turned to leave, she caught his arm. "Why are you helping me?"
Adeyemi's eyes locked onto hers, and for a moment, Mosun saw something there – something that made her breath catch.
"Because," he said, his voice low, "I have my own secrets, Mosun. And I think you're the only one who can uncover them."
The night seemed to hold its breath as Mosun's eyes met Adeyemi's. The air was charged with tension, and Mosun knew – this was just the beginning 😏
