I crossed the room with unsteady steps and sat on the edge of the leather chair. The smooth material felt cold against my skin through my thin pants. Marcus did not speak immediately. He remained leaning back, his large hands resting flat on the mahogany desk, his dark eyes tracking my every movement. The silence in the office felt heavy, vibrating with the sudden shift in our dynamic. I kept my hands pressed tightly between my knees to stop the trembling.
“You are entirely certain about this, Claire?” Marcus asked. His voice was a low, granular rumble that vibrated straight through the floorboards.
“I am certain,” I answered. I forced my chin up, refusing to let him see the sheer terror clawing at the back of my throat. “I am tired of waiting for the numbness to go away on its own.”
Marcus closed his eyes for a single, long second. A tight muscle ticked violently along the edge of his jaw. When he opened them again, the neutral, polite guardian persona he had worn for three months was entirely gone. A cold, absolute authority replaced it. He leaned forward, resting his forearms on the desk, invading my space without moving from his chair.
“If I agree to this, we do it my way,” he said, his words measured and completely unyielding. “This is not a casual game. It is an instruction. If you want to understand what the text is teaching, you will follow every single directive without hesitation or argument.”
I swallowed the dry lump in my throat and nodded once. “I understand.”
“I am not finished,” Marcus interrupted, his tone sharpening. “There are three absolute conditions. If you break even one of them, the arrangement ends instantly, and we never speak of those pages again. First, this does not leave this house. No friends, no coworkers, no one can ever know what happens in these rooms. The world outside sees exactly what they see now: a guardian providing shelter for his late friend’s daughter. Clear?”
“Clear,” I whispered.
“Second,” he continued, holding up another finger, his gaze locking onto mine with terrifying intensity. “You do not practice on your own. You do not touch yourself in your room, you do not experiment in the shower, and you do not test the limits when you think I am not looking. Every single step of your progress happens under my guidance, when I tell you, and exactly how I tell you. Your body belongs to the instruction now.”
A fierce wave of heat flooded my cheeks. The thought of my body belonging to his instruction made my pulse spike frantically in my throat. I squeezed my hands tighter together. “Understood.”
“Third,” Marcus said, his voice dropping into a quieter, darker register that sent a shiver straight down my spine. “There is no physical contact between us. I will not touch you, Claire. I will use my words to guide your hands, and you will do the physical work. I am the instructor, and you are the student. The boundary between us remains absolute.”
A sudden, sharp sting of disappointment cut through my chest, surprising me with its intensity. I had not realized until that exact moment that part of me had desperately wanted his hands on me. I kept my expression blank, forcing myself to accept the cold reality of his terms. “No physical contact. I understand.”
Marcus studied my face for several long seconds, searching for any sign of hesitation or deceit. Apparently satisfied with what he found, he reached out and smoothly closed his laptop, shutting out the last remaining glow of corporate reality from the room. The shadows in the corners of the office seemed to deepen instantly.
“Good,” Marcus said, standing up from his chair. He towered over the desk, his broad shoulders blocking out the fading afternoon light from the window. “Then we begin right now with your first assessment. Stand up.”
My heart took a violent leap against my ribs. I rose from the leather chair, my legs feeling strangely weak beneath me. I stood in the center of the office, my arms hanging awkwardly at my sides, feeling entirely exposed under his piercing scrutiny.
“Stand straight,” Marcus commanded, walking around the perimeter of the desk until he was standing a mere two feet away from me. The rich, woody scent of his cologne filled my senses, making my head spin slightly. He kept his hands clasped firmly behind his back, adhering strictly to his own rule. “Look at me.”
I raised my eyes to his. Up close, I could see the tiny lines of tension etched around his eyes and the severe set of his mouth. He was fighting his own battle, keeping his composure under a lock and key.
“Before you can learn to feel pleasure, you must learn to observe your own physical state,” Marcus explained, his voice calm and clinical. “Tell me what your body is doing right now.”
“My heart is beating very fast,” I managed to say, my voice sounding incredibly small in the quiet room.
“What else?” he prompted, his dark eyes dropping briefly to my hands before returning to my face. “Be specific, Claire. Do not hide the details from me.”
“My hands are cold,” I continued, my cheeks burning with a fresh wave of heat. “And my skin feels tight. Like I am waiting for something to happen.”
“You are tense,” Marcus diagnosed, nodding once. “Your muscles are locked up because you are anticipating an outcome. That is exactly why your attempts upstairs failed. You were chasing a result instead of paying attention to the immediate reality of your skin.”
He took a half-step back, creating a tiny bit of breathing room between us, though his intense focus never wavered.
“Go back upstairs to your room,” Marcus instructed, his tone brooking no argument. “You will change into comfortable clothes. You will lie on top of the covers and breathe normally for thirty minutes without touching yourself. Pay attention to the weight of your own body against the mattress. Notice how the fabric of your clothes feels against your skin. That is your baseline assignment for tonight.”
“That is all?” I asked, unable to hide the slight note of frustration in my voice.
Marcus’s eyes darkened significantly, a sudden flash of dangerous authority crossing his features. “That is your first lesson, Claire. Do not disrespect the small steps. I will come up to your room at exactly eight o'clock tonight to check your progress. Do not be late.”
I nodded, not trusting my voice to respond. I turned, walked quickly to the office door, and turned the handle. I stepped out into the cool hallway and pulled the heavy door shut behind me, hearing the firm click of the latch.
I stood in the corridor for a long moment, my hands shaking badly as the reality of what I had just agreed to settled into my bones. The rules were set. The boundaries were drawn. And at eight o'clock tonight, Marcus was coming to my bedroom to start the instruction.
