The grandfather clock in the downstairs foyer struck eight times, the heavy brass chimes vibrating faintly up through the floorboards of my bedroom. I sat perfectly still on the edge of the mattress, my back rigid. I had changed into a pair of loose, gray cotton sweatpants and a thin white tank top as instructed. My skin prickled with a mixture of cold nervousness and acute anticipation. For the last thirty minutes, I had forced myself to lie flat on the covers, counting my breaths and trying to catalog the heavy weight of my limbs against the fabric.
A firm, measured knock rattled the wood of my bedroom door.
My pulse skipped a beat. I cleared my throat, trying to find my voice before answering. "Come in."
The brass handle turned smoothly. Marcus stepped inside, closing the heavy panel behind him with a quiet, decisive click. He had left his jacket downstairs, but his black dress shirt remained buttoned straight to the throat, the sleeves still folded neatly to his elbows. He did not look around the room. His focus locked onto me instantly, assessing my posture with that same unsettling, clinical concentration from the office. He kept his hands loosely clasped behind his back.
"Did you complete the assignment?" he asked, walking a few steps into the room and stopping at the foot of the bed.
"Yes," I replied, my voice slightly breathless. "I lay here for the full half hour. I did not touch myself."
"Tell me what you observed," he commanded. He leaned his weight back slightly against the dark wooden post of my bedframe, maintaining the mandatory two feet of distance between us. "Describe the baseline."
"The mattress felt solid underneath me," I said, forcing myself to recall the sensations systematically so he would not think I was failing the lesson. "At first, my mind was racing too fast. But after a few minutes, I started noticing the air in the room. It felt cooler on my bare shoulders compared to the heat trapped under my sweatpants."
Marcus nodded once, his severe expression softening by a microscopic fraction. "Good. What else?"
"I noticed my own breathing," I added, looking down at my hands resting flat on my thighs. "It took a long time to slow down. I could feel the texture of the cotton sheet against my heels every time my legs tensed up."
"You are beginning to isolate individual sensory inputs," Marcus explained, his low tone washing over the quiet bedroom like a heavy anchor. "When you tried this alone, your brain was overwhelmed by a single, desperate desire for an endgame. You ignored the foundation. If you cannot perceive the subtle weight of your own clothing, your nervous system will never register the specialized touch required for release."
He took one hand out from behind his back, gesturing toward the pillows behind me. "Lie back against the cushions. Keep your legs straight. Do not close your eyes yet."
I shifted my weight, sliding backward until my shoulders rested against the headboard, my legs extended flat across the comforter. My heart began to hammer with a renewed, frantic cadence against my ribs. The sheer intimacy of having Marcus stand over my bed, watching me lie down, made the air in the room feel impossibly thick.
"Place your right palm flat against the center of your chest, right over your sternum," Marcus instructed, his dark eyes tracking my arm as I raised it. "Do not apply pressure. Just rest the weight of your hand there."
I followed the command. The warmth of my own skin radiated up through the thin white cotton of my tank top, meeting the palm of my hand.
"Close your eyes now," Marcus said quietly.
I let my eyelids drop, plunging myself into darkness. Without the visual distraction of his towering frame, my other senses flared to life. I could hear the slow, rhythmic sound of Marcus breathing near the foot of my bed. I could smell the faint, clean scent of his shaving cream.
"Focus entirely on the point of contact," Marcus guided, his voice dropping into a smoother, more deliberate cadence. "Feel the expansion of your lungs against your palm. Notice how much effort it takes to keep your hand perfectly still while your chest rises and falls."
I stayed completely motionless, letting the seconds stretch out into long, languid waves. The simple friction of my shirt moving against my skin became intensely vivid. The heat under my hand began to pool, growing more pronounced with every breath I took.
"Now," Marcus spoke again, his voice sounding closer than before, though I knew he had not broken his rule of contact. "Slide your hand down to your stomach. Move slowly. Stop when your fingers touch the waistband of your pants."
I dragged my palm downward over my ribs, the fabric bunching slightly beneath my fingers. I stopped exactly at the thick elastic band of my gray sweatpants.
"Leave it there," he commanded softly. "Notice the transition. The skin over your stomach is thinner than your chest. The core of your body holds more heat. Do you feel the difference?"
"Yes," I whispered into the dark room. My throat felt incredibly dry.
"Describe it to me, Claire."
"It feels warmer here," I said, my lips moving against the heavy air. "The pulse in my stomach is stronger. It feels like the skin is tighter, waiting."
"That is expectation trying to override attention," Marcus corrected, his tone patient but absolute. "Acknowledge the anticipation, then let it go. Return to the flat sensation of your skin. We do not rush the baseline."
I forced myself to inhale deeply, letting the rigid tension leave my shoulders. I focused entirely on the simple, heavy weight of my hand resting against the cotton waistband. Time seemed to lose its meaning in the darkness behind my eyelids. The empty, frustrating failure I had felt earlier in the day began to recede, replaced by a strange, hyper-aware focus that made every inch of my body feel intensely alive.
"You are settling," Marcus observed, his voice dropping a fraction lower, turning into a private, dark current in the quiet room. "Your breathing has stabilized. The skin under your fingers is receptive now."
He paused, a long, heavy silence stretching between us that made my pulse throb in my ears.
"Slide your hand beneath the waistband," Marcus instructed calmly. "Do not go past the top of your underwear yet. Just rest your bare palm against the skin of your lower abdomen. Do it now."
My breath hitched sharply in my throat. I hesitated for a fraction of a second, my face burning with a sudden, exquisite shame, before my fingers obeyed his command. The direct contact of skin against skin sent a primitive, electric jolt straight to my core.
